I’m of Haitian descent, and I’m proud of that. Haiti made history as the first free Black republic and the only nation founded through a successful slave revolt. No country is perfect, and Haiti has faced enormous challenges, but saying Haitians have no culture or contributed nothing to the world is simply inaccurate. Haitian culture is reflected in our language, music, art, cuisine, faith, traditions, and resilience. The Haitian Revolution changed the course of history and inspired enslaved and oppressed people around the world to fight for freedom. You can criticize Haiti’s problems, but you can’t erase its impact.

Haiti’s Revolution was the foundation for Black liberation movements across the Americas. It was the first successful slave revolt in history and created the first free Black republic. Was everything handled perfectly afterward? No. But that doesn’t erase Haiti’s impact on world history or the rich culture Haitians have contributed to the world.
