The last Sunday in September is Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. Today, RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador officers and veterans will join our partners in a special parade and memorial at the Confederation Building, where a monument stands in honour of those who have lost their lives in service to our province. From coast to coast to coast, we rely on police and peace officers to keep our communities safe. These dedicated individuals make a choice to serve others, often at a great personal risk to themselves. On Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day, we acknowledge and remember all of those who never returned home. We honour their tremendous dedication and sacrifice, and hold their families and friends in our thoughts.

Hunting season is almost here, and a little planning ahead of time can make big difference if things don’t go according to plan. 🫎 Many outdoor emergencies don’t start with a catastrophe – they start with a dead battery, unexpected weather or someone straying off the path they know. Before heading out, make sure someone at home knows where you’ll be, who you’re with and when you expect to return. If someone knows your plan, they can recognize sooner when something isn’t right and provide information if help is needed. Good planning doesn’t stop when you load up your gear. Harbour Breton RCMP stops out of province driver for speeding on Canada Drive A Harbour Breton RCMP officer on patrol stopped a vehicle for excessive speeding on Thursday, after he was caught driving two and a half times the posted speed limit. Shortly after 5:00 p.m. on September 24, police captured a sports car on radar travelling 100 km/hr along Canada Drive, in a 40 km/hr zone. The driver - a 26-year-old Ontario man - was ticketed for excessive speeding and his licence was suspended roadside. Police also determined the vehicle was not properly insured and laid additional fines. His vehicle was seized and impounded. RCMP NL reminds motorists that higher speeds reduce a driver’s ability to react; increases stopping distances and dramatically increases the force of impact during any collision.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their relationship. Clare’s Law was created to provide information that can help people make informed decisions about their safety. Clare’s Law (officially known as the Interpersonal Violence Disclosure Protocol Act), allows police to share certain information with people who may be at risk of intimate partner violence. Those who feel at risk can request specific information about their partner’s violent or abusive history through an application which is processed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) or Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC). Intimate partner violence can take many forms, including physical violence, threats, controlling behavior, emotional abuse and financial control. Knowing the signs and understanding your options can help protect you and those you care about.
