🧠 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 Who gains when restaurants adopt digital delivery platforms? Research by Pascuel Plotkin using Brazilian data finds that delivery platforms don’t simply create new work: they reorganize who performs it and who receives the income. 🔍 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 • Five quarters after adopting a platform, restaurants reduce in-house labor hours by 7.6%, while total hours, including platform delivery work, remain roughly unchanged. • The decline is concentrated among waiters and other service workers, while cooks are largely unaffected. Displaced waiters rarely become couriers and often move to other formal jobs. • Workers at exposed competitors lose more than workers at adopting restaurants due to their employer being more likely to close. • Most platform gains go to workers with weak ties to formal employment: workers entering from informal employment or recent job loss make up 77% of platform workers. • The effects are also gendered. Women bear more of the losses in restaurant employment, while men receive most of the new platform income. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 📢 Digital platforms can create new earning opportunities while shifting existing work outside the firm.
