A suggestion for those who don't support the death penalty because sometimes innocent people are convicted: Introduce a higher level of legal certainty than the standard "beyond a reasonable doubt." If someone is convicted by means of "incontrovertible evidence," as determined by not only a jury but an automatic appeals court review of the evidence (not a retrial, just ensuring evidence is incontrovertible), then they qualify for the death penalty. Caveat: no appeals allowed beyond the evidence review, and execution happens within a short period of time (say 2-3 months). This would save taxpayers money on the repetitive, drawn-out appeals process we have now, while making it all but impossible for innocent people to be convicted in error. It would also better serve to strike terror into the hearts of evildoers, knowing that they will not get to live for decades at the expense of the taxpayer once sentenced to death.
