"We make missiles like sausages"—that was a phrase that only worked on a society afraid of its own shadow.
They thought that manufactured fear would be enough to win a war against the country that knew them best.
When things got tough—as became apparent within 72 hours—a new conflict serving as a distraction was on the verge of erupting between Israel and Hamas.
Ukraine is holding firm against all odds and despite the additional aid going to the friends of autocracy.
Now, all 72 of Ukraine's allies have become the target.
But Ukraine has already dispelled that manufactured fear through its display of courage and dignity.
One can only hope that, as some claim, the war might end before winter sets in.
The fact remains that Putin needs the war to survive; as long as manufactured fear can take root in European society, we will eventually come to view the Kremlin's constant acts of aggression as the new normal.
