The Best Solution for this Whole stray Dog Problem according to me:
(Most of you might find it infeasible)
There are around 1.5 crore stray dogs in India
Step 1.
Euthanize dogs with incurable terminal illnesses and confirmed rabies cases.
This will reduce a large chunk of stray dogs
Step 2.
Sterilize all remaining dogs
Vaccinate them against rabies and all other diseases
Treat injuries and minor illnesses
Give every dog a unique ID/microchip
Step 3.
Categorize them:
Young & docile
Middle-aged & docile
Old & docile
Aggressive
Disabled/injured
Special medical cases
( for adoption protocol )
Step 4.
Create a nationwide online adoption platform
Upload the profile, photo, age, health and temperament of every adoptable dog
( so people can get the nearby dog)
Step 5.
Biggest reason people do not wanna adopt stray dogs because do not want to get into the fucc and financial load of vaccination and initial medical care .
So Government provides vaccination, sterilization and initial medical care free of cost to adopters
Step 6.
Build government/private shelters and rehabilitation centres for dogs which people do not wanna adopt .
Step 7.
Aggressive and dangerous dogs undergo professional behavioural assessment and rehabilitation
Dogs that remain genuinely dangerous
Should be taken care of accordingly
Step 8.
If anyone abandons the dog - Fine them as the dog will have microchip which will tell who abandoned the dog
Continue this for 5-6 years until the number of dogs living permanently on streets approaches zero.
The ultimate goal:
No dogs living on streets. Every dog either has a home, is in a legitimate shelter/rehabilitation facility, or is receiving appropriate veterinary care.
