Brooke Matthews grew up near the eighth hole at Pinnacle Country Club. A lifelong Arkansas fan, she was there in 2007 when Stacy Lewis won the first edition of the rain-shortened and unofficial Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship. The Matthews family hosted Wendy Ward and Vicki Goetz-Ackerman in those early days. In fact, Goetz-Ackerman, now a staff member of the LPGA, still stays with the family during tournament week. The Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship celebrates 20 years this week in Rogers, Arkansas, an important milestone on a tour that sees a good deal of turnover every year. An elite gymnast growing up, Matthews played her first competitive golf tournament around age 12 and dreamed big. "I got to see the best golfers in the world literally in my backyard," said Matthews. "Seeing them out there gave me my first inspiration – maybe I would like to do that someday." Matthews, 28, grew up to not only play for the Razorbacks but earn her LPGA card. She's one of five Arkansas players in the field this week, joined by three-time LPGA winner Gaby Lopez, NCAA champions Maria Fassi and Maria Jose Marin and Reagan Zibilski, an Epson Tour player making her LPGA debut this week.
