It’s Dyslexia Awareness Week! 💡 We asked some of our dyslexic colleagues at Real Group what message they would want to send to employers and what has personally helped them in the workplace. Here’s what they said: 💬 "Dyslexic thinkers bring creativity, problem-solving and fresh perspectives to the workplace, exactly the kind of thinking we need in a fast-changing world. Employers should recognise this." - Kate Sutton, Dyslexia Action Tutor 💬“Everyone’s experience of dyslexia is different, so if in doubt - ask! One thing I’ve found useful is when I’ve had a conversation (planned or impromptu) with a colleague and an action point arises, if they can follow up with an email with a clear 'subject' it acts as a helpful prompt.” - Dr Hélène Cohen, Real Training iSENCO Tutor 💬 "Dyslexia can mean some tasks take greater effort, but processing information differently also brings unique opportunities - such as creative problem solving and strong interpersonal skills. Things like voice recognition software can help level the playing field." - Jessica Milligan, Real Training Module Leader People experience dyslexia differently, but here are a few general suggestions for employers: 🚫 Avoid: Meetings without agendas Dense email prose that could be bulleted Heavy-handed critique of spelling/grammar issues Putting people on the spot in meetings Giving rapid multi-step instructions all at once (especially verbally) ✅ Ideas for support: Send short videos to accompany pdfs/decks (ScreenPal, Loom, etc) Send documents well in advance of meetings Offer a trusted colleague as a proofreader Break large projects into clear, agreed-upon milestones Create opportunities to come up with a new process/reverse a problem/think creatively Enable approved AI meeting assistants or transcription tools Inclusive practices like these can lower friction and improve clarity for your entire team. #DyslexiaAwarenessWeek #NeurodiversityAtWork #InclusiveWorkplace #DyslexiaInTheWorkplace #Accessibility #DAW26

Inclusion bases can uplift an entire school - or risk creating isolated, parallel communities. 🏫✨ In her latest article, Educational Psychologist, Dr. Sarah Musgrave, explores how we move beyond "pseudo-belonging" to genuine inclusion for students. One key way to do this is by building intrinsic motivation. Self-Determination Theory describes this as the interplay between; 🔹 Autonomy: Giving structured, bounded choices over learning and regulation. 🔹 Relatedness: Moving beyond "feeling welcome" to showing pupils they truly matter and can be depended upon. 🔹 Competence: Building a sense of mastery so students feel capable in both the base and (where possible) mainstream settings. When we empower students (and staff) by enabling this internal drive, coupled with an environment that adapts to needs and wider school culture that rejects “othering”, bases can become a “powerhouse for inclusion”. 👉 Read Sarah’s practical takeaways for SLT and #SENCOs here: realtraining.co.uk/z652 #inclusion #whitepaper #SENDreforms #schools #SENCOs #inclusionbases

A good SEND intervention supplements the inclusive teaching taking place in our classrooms. But before we add another thing to our to-do list, are we making sure we take the right steps to ensure the intervention has the best chance of being successfully embedded? Real Training MEd Programme Lead and former SENCO, Katie Hickin, takes a look at how implementation science can help us bridge the “implementation gap” and increase the likelihood of sustainable success. Are we really giving new SEND interventions an equal chance of succeeding?🧐 Often, it’s not just a matter of what intervention we choose, but how we introduce, support, and sustain it. Are we balancing teacher agency with fidelity? Have we really got the buy-in from pupils/parents and all staff involved? Is it a good fit for our resources and timetabling? Would pupil needs be better met by adjustments to whole-class teaching? Real Training MEd Programme Lead and former SENCO, Katie Hickin, takes a look at how the growing area of implementation science can provide the framework and methodology to bridge this “implementation gap”.
