i don't watch the games but from what i am interpreting here is the Captain was promoted a little too early and is in a 'sulky' frame of mind? Hard to say what his expectations are or if he is playing with a nagging injury too

Good workplace communication comes from a supportive culture where reprisal doesn't really exist. People avoid speaking up because they feel their opinion is not valued, not wanted, made to feel silly etc. Good cultures are naturally conversational
