People will tell you it’s “just a dog.” They are wrong in the way that only people who have never shared a house with one can be wrong.
A dog learns the exact sound of your car, the exact hour you usually stand up, the exact tone that means you are about to leave. They rearrange their entire day around yours without ever being asked. Over years that stops being a pet relationship and becomes the same quiet dependence you have on the other people who live under your roof. When they are gone, the house does not simply feel emptier. It keeps offering the routines they used to answer, and nothing answers back.
That is why the loss lands harder than most outsiders expect. You are not mourning an animal you fed. You are mourning a family member who never learned how to be anywhere else but next to you, and who spent the last of their strength still trying to do exactly that.
My Big was eating treats until the very end and on massively powerful pain meds. He slipped away happy and with his dignity and love.
Tumors were growing into his nerves and his heart had enlarged.
He was a very very good boy ❤️
