Early detection can save a newborn’s life. Joined by my friends Jim and Jill Kelly, I announced the bipartisan Surge to Save Newborns Act. It provides $35M a year to help states expand newborn screenings, detect serious diseases sooner and give more babies the chance to thrive.

We owe firefighters a debt we can never repay. They risk their lives to keep us safe. The risks for them never ends, even long after retirement. Firefighters face bigger risk for cancers, especially esophageal cancer. We must give them every tool to stay safe, from better protective gear to screenings that can detect pre-cancer before it becomes deadly.

1885. Exactly 141 years ago. That's when New York’s outdated Scaffold Law was enacted. It's time is up. It has to go. It drives up insurance and construction costs, making it a lot more expensive to build here. That's one topic talked about with representatives from the Professional Insurance Agents of New York (PIANY). We discussed my bill, Infrastructure Expansion Act, to reform this costly mandate, cut unnecessary red tape and help bring crushing costs down for New Yorkers.

The fire might be out. The emergency might be over. But the risks of cancer can remain for years for first responders. To every firefighter, active or retired: please get screened. Today I visited Clarence Center Fire Department to talk about the importance of early detection in saving lives and the work I’m doing in Congress to ensure every firefighter has access to screenings and treatment.
