Yom Kippur begins at sundown tonight. It’s the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, a time for reflection, atonement, and renewal. To everyone in South Florida and across the country observing: g’mar chatimah tova. May you be sealed for a good year, and may your fast be meaningful and easy.

More than 80,000 Americans are still out there, in jungles and on ocean floors and in fields half a world away. Every day that they are not here, our nation grieves. On this National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we’re thinking about them. To the families still waiting and to our neighbors still out there: we will not rest until you are home.

Congratulations to Maria Hinojosa on receiving @CHCI’s Medallion of Excellence tonight! For more than three decades, her reporting has given voice to Latino families across this country, including the ones I represent in South Florida. She built Latino USA and Futuro Media into institutions, and she made room for stories no one else was telling. Congratulations and felicidades, Maria!

For thirty years, Take Stock in Children has helped Florida kids break the cycle of poverty through education. It was a privilege to meet with their team this week to brainstorm ways to expand their incredible work to students in every corner of our state. There’s no better investment than Florida’s next generation. When we invest in her kids, our whole state moves forward.

From public safety to healthcare, education to economic development, these are the people who make South Florida an outstanding place to work and live. We're proud to celebrate them this Hispanic Heritage Month and every month, and grateful for everything they do for our community.

Robert Diaz is a Senior Director at Broward College, leading initiatives focused on STEM education and expanding opportunities for Hispanic and underrepresented students. Through his leadership of Project ACCESS, he's strengthened pathways into science, technology, engineering, and math for the next generation.

Elba Jimenez is an attorney and Misdemeanor Supervisor with the Broward County Public Defender's Office, spending seven years defending the constitutional rights of those who can't afford representation. She also serves on the Executive Board of the Hispanic Vote Broward County Chapter, empowering the Hispanic community through civic engagement.

Born and raised in Hialeah, Officer Thomas Mendoza traded pro baseball for law enforcement. Now with the Boca Raton Police Services Department, he serves on Road Patrol as a Field Training Officer, using his background coaching young athletes to help new officers build the skills and confidence to succeed.

South Florida's Hispanic community shapes who we are every single day,  in our neighborhoods, our workplaces, and our public life. This Hispanic Heritage Month, I want to recognize just a few of the leaders making our community stronger.

It was an honor to join @ftlauderdalepd to help cut the ribbon on their brand new headquarters. Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect our community every single day. They’ve earned a state-of-the-art home built to support that mission. I’m proud to see this investment in public safety become a reality and even more proud to represent the men and women of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

My office is closely monitoring the situation in Brickell following the crane collapse on Brickell Bay Drive. Thank you to the first responders who are on the scene right now, my office will continue to provide updates as they come.

Twenty-five years after 9/11, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives stolen, the families forever changed, and the extraordinary courage of those who answered the call. Honoring them means caring for those still here, including first responders and survivors who became sick after 9/11. We must ensure they receive the care and support they deserve. Thank you to the City of Hollywood and everyone who joined us today, including our firefighters, police officers, and military service members. May we carry forward the unity and compassion that brought our country together in its darkest hours. We will never forget.

September 11, 2001 was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. A generation will never forget where they were that morning: the morning we lost nearly 3,000 innocent souls in one of the most horrific acts of terror the world has ever seen. But they could not break us. In the days that followed, we saw the best of America. We saw first responders who ran toward the danger, neighbors carrying one another through rubble, and a nation that rose together. Tonight, two beams of light will rise where the towers stood: a quiet reminder that even in our deepest grief, we endure.

I'm proud to have secured $1.2 million for a project near and dear to all our hearts here in Fort Lauderdale: making Las Olas safer for the people who use it every day. Las Olas is a special place in our community. This funding will help keep that charm while redesigning it into a world-class walkable street that works for both drivers and pedestrians. As we work toward a Fort Lauderdale where no one has to worry about losing a loved one to a traffic crash, investments like this are how we get there. Honored to join Mayor Trantalis and the City Commission today to make it official.

I’m proud to have secured $1 million for a project that matters to every one of us who drives in Broward County: the Port Everglades Bypass Road. Port Everglades is one of the busiest ports in the country and an economic engine for our entire region. This funding will help build a new route that moves port traffic where it needs to go and keeps it off the streets where our families live. This investment will help ease congestion for our neighbors while keeping the port the powerhouse it is. Thank you to Mayor Bogen, the County Commission, and County Administrator Cepero for joining me today to make it official and I’m proud to be your partner in Washington.
