Since its establishment in 1999, the Office of the Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues (SEHI) has been the only office in the federal government solely devoted to pursuing justice for Holocaust survivors and advocating on their behalf. For decades, SEHI has worked with foreign governments, international institutions, and Jewish organizations to pursue restitution and compensation for survivors and their families, recover Nazi-looted property, preserve Holocaust memory, and address unresolved Holocaust-era obligations. As the number of living Holocaust survivors continues to decline, this work is only becoming more urgent, amplifying the need to appoint a career official as the next SEHI, with the seniority, diplomatic experience, and specialized expertise necessary to negotiate complex restitution and compensation matters. I was proud to work with @RepNadler and members of the Congressional Jewish Caucus to urge Secretary Rubio to preserve the Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues position as a distinct and permanent office. This work is too important to be consolidated or eliminated, and we will continue to fight for the pursuit of justice on behalf of Holocaust survivors and their families.

Once again, President Trump is showing his utter contempt for the fundamental principles that have made America a great nation. Freedom of the press is enshrined in our Constitution, not just because the Framers included it, but equally so because the people (“we the people”) demanded it. To quote Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black: “In the First Amendment, the Founding Fathers gave the free press the protection it must have to fulfill its essential role in our democracy. The press was to serve the governed, not the governors. The government’s power to censor the press was abolished so that the press would remain forever free to censure the government. This week marks six years since the signing of the Abraham Accords. In 2020, I was proud to be on the White House lawn to witness that historic signing, and as Co-Chair of the Abraham Accords Caucus, I am committed to advancing the mission of the agreement as we work toward a more secure and prosperous Middle East. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Morocco Caucus, I also applaud this week's trilateral meeting between the United States, Israel and Morocco discussing the unlimited opportunities for partnership and cooperation. The long-term success of the Abraham Accords is paramount to regional stability and U.S. national security. I will continue working with colleagues in Congress and our international partners to build on existing momentum and create opportunities for expansion.

No votes = no tie, and although I love a casual Thursday, this is not the time to be playing hooky. Speaker Johnson has sent Republicans home for the 16th time this year. At a time when Americans are struggling with rising costs and our nation is embroiled in a war in the Middle East, sending Congress home is the exact opposite of what we should be doing. We demand hard work from Americans every single day. So why, when Americans demand that same hard work from us, do Republicans choose to leave town instead? Every day I hear directly from constituents in my District about the high cost of living. I voted for the bipartisan Ratepayer Protection Act to help address the impact large-load customers like data centers will continue to have on our electric grid and ultimately Illinois residents’ wallets. Twenty-five years after the devastating September 11 terrorist attacks on our nation, we continue to confront an evolving terrorism landscape that demands an equally dynamic counterterrorism response. Since that day, we have worked to ensure that an attack like 9/11 never happens again. We must continue that work by strengthening partnerships with allies and partners overseas, disrupting terrorist networks and their proxies, and doing everything we can to keep Americans safe. Terrorism can emerge from anywhere, and our counterterrorism efforts must reflect that reality. Our resources, strategies, and partnerships should not be narrowly focused on a handful of designated areas. Instead, we must cast a broad net to identify, disrupt, and counter terrorist threats wherever they emerge.
