I had the privilege of serving alongside Former Texas State Representative Garnet Coleman in the Texas House of Representatives, where he dedicated more than 30 years of his life to serving the people of Texas. I saw firsthand the deep sense of responsibility he brought to his work and to the people he represented. Garnet was more than a dedicated public servant—he was a mentor, a friend, and someone whose presence left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. I was joined by the seniors at the Martin Weiss Recreation Center to announce $1.2 million in federal investment to support improvements at the center in Oak Cliff and they were so excited to hear about the enhancements to their programming that will come through this funding.   Martin Weiss is more than a recreation center—it is a place where our community comes together, where young people find opportunity, and where generations of Dallas residents can learn, play, and grow.   Delivering resources like this is about making sure every neighborhood has access to safe, welcoming spaces that strengthen communities and create opportunity. Your own agency has a request on file from our office to repatriate Sabon — you’d know that if anyone over there checked their inbox before hitting tweet. And since you brought up today’s visit: it wasn’t about him. Staff went to Prairieland to follow up on a Christian pastor who fled Iran, was granted asylum by your own government, has serious health conditions requiring immediate medical attention — and is still sitting in your custody, months after the US went to war with the very regime she escaped. That’s the story you should be answering for. This is exactly the problem with border theater. ICE is trying to turn routine congressional oversight into a political spectacle.

$850,000 is headed to Forest Hill to help build a smarter, stronger community. This past week, I had the chance to present the City of Forest Hill with $850,000 for its Smart City Community Development Program The funding will support smart water meters, energy-efficient LED lighting, and more accessible sidewalks—investments that will help the city save money, improve services, and make Forest Hill more walkable and connected. A $1 million investment in the West Dallas Pedestrian/Bike Land Bridge is an investment in connecting people, neighborhoods, and opportunity. Presented to the Trinity Park Conservancy last Thursday, these resources will help create safe pedestrian and bike access between West Dallas, Trinity Park, and the rest of the city—across a divide that has long separated our communities. Investments like this do more than build bridges and trails. They help create healthier, safer, and more economically vibrant communities across Dallas.

On August 6, 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law. This milestone came as a result of decades of determination and relentless advocacy by Americans. Since then, we’ve seen countless efforts to undo the progress we fought so hard for. That’s why I support the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would protect and advance the rights secured on this day in 1965.

Tarrant County commissioners are proposing to cut polling locations by 44% from the last midterm elections. That means longer lines, farther travel, and fewer options for voters - hitting communities of color hardest. Commissioners should vote NO on this proposal. nbcdfw.com/news/local/tarran…

Restricting access to mail ballots doesn't affect everyone equally. When voting becomes harder, the burden often falls heaviest on Black, Latino, Native, disabled, elderly, and low-income voters. Democracy works best when every eligible voter can participate, not when new barriers are added.
