Salem Democrats can approve $338 million but can’t make sure the problems get fixed. A new audit found Oregon’s Department of Education fully implemented just ONE of eight recommendations from its 2024 audit and still lacks adequate oversight to ensure corrections happen. This is the failure of accountability I keep calling out under Democratic leadership. They approve the spending. They own the responsibility. Students are expected to do their homework. Policies matter. Results matter. And voters deserve to know what we stand for. Democrats should have to defend their policies and explain why they believe more of the same will produce better results. Campaign slogans don’t answer those questions. I stand for freedom. Freedom to make a living, build a business, and keep more of what you earn. Freedom for your children to get a good education that prepares them for life and for parents to have a meaningful voice in that education. Freedom from government trying to control every part of your life through more taxes, more regulations, and more mandates. Freedom to choose what’s best for your family, practice your faith, speak your mind, and pursue your future. With that freedom comes responsibility. We work hard, care for our neighbors, and hold the people spending our tax dollars accountable. As your state representative, I’ll keep fighting for policies that respect your work, protect your rights, and give you more control over your future. I want government focused on its responsibilities and accountable for its results. You work for your paycheck. Government should work for you.

I often wonder what Democrats running for state office are offering Oregonians beyond promises and campaign talking points. Oregon continues to face serious challenges under a party system that has controlled Oregon’s government for some time: •Students struggling in reading, math, and science •Businesses dealing with taxes, regulations, and rising operating costs •Low workforce participation and persistent unemployment •Increasing electricity, housing, food, and transportation costs •A continuing homelessness crisis •Serious financial pressure on hospitals and healthcare providers •Rural communities feeling ignored by decision-makers in Salem •A state government that continues spending more without consistently delivering better results These Democratic policies did not appear overnight, and more of the same won’t fix Oregon’s issues. But Oregon’s elected Democrats should still be held accountable for the policies they support and the results those policies produce. So, my question is: Why vote another Democrat into office? Oregonians should expect more than slogans. They deserve specific plans, measurable goals, and leaders willing to admit when current policies are not working. That is the conversation we should be having because more of the same isn’t working.

Governor Kotek wants Oregonians to blame President Trump for a proposed $250 million Bonneville Power Administration rate increase. But here’s the part she leaves out: After the federal agreement ended, Kotek publicly backed Oregon’s return to court. The State of Oregon then asked for increased water spill over eight Columbia and Snake River dams, the very action that reduced hydropower generation and increased costs. Now BPA wants ratepayers to cover the bill. Kotek supported the policy. Oregon pursued the court order. But when the consequences arrived, she blamed Trump. Oregonians deserve affordable, reliable electricity and leaders who take responsibility for the costs of their own policies. This article should be titled: “Tina Kotek Promises to Fix the Problems Her Policies Helped Create.” Tina Kotek has held state office for nearly two decades, first as a legislator, then as Speaker of the House, and now as governor. During that time, she has been a driving force behind the same policies that have left Oregon struggling with failing schools, homelessness, unaffordable housing, high taxes and a weak economy. Now, as she asks voters for another four years, she suddenly promises to improve education, increase affordability and boost economic growth. But even OPB acknowledges that her plan offers few details about how she would accomplish, or pay for, many of these promises. Why has it taken nearly 20 years for Tina Kotek to recognize these problems? This sounds less like a serious plan and more like campaign chatter. Oregon doesn’t need four more years of the same ideology, excuses and failed policies. We need new direction, real accountability and leaders willing to admit when government is not working. Americans are seeing encouraging economic news: median household income reached a record high, while the national poverty rate fell to its lowest level on record. But Oregon is being left behind. Our unemployment rate remains stuck at 5.2%. Nearly 771,000 Oregonians received SNAP benefits during fiscal year 2025, while thousands more families rely on TANF cash assistance just to make ends meet. Oregon Democrats can blame President Trump all they want but that doesn’t explain why the rest of the country is outperforming Oregon. The same national economy applies to every state. Oregon’s problems are the result of decades of one-party control, high taxes, excessive regulations, restricted natural resources, and policies that drive employers and jobs away. Democrats keep telling us their agenda is working, but working for whom? Oregon doesn’t need more of the same. We need to lower costs, stop punishing employers, responsibly develop our natural resources, and put Oregonians back to work. The numbers don’t lie. Oregon’s unemployment rate has remained above 5% for a year and a half. Here in Josephine County, it’s even worse, reaching 7.7%, the highest unemployment rate of any Oregon county in July. At what point do Oregon Democrats admit their policies aren’t working? Oregon is rich in timber, minerals and other natural resources that could support good-paying jobs, especially in rural communities. Instead, Democrats continue fighting to keep those resources off-limits, shutting down economic opportunities while families struggle to find work. Higher taxes, heavier regulations and rising costs are driving even more opportunities out of our state. Yet their answer is always the same: double down on more taxes, more spending, more restrictions and more government control. Oregonians don’t need more of the same failed policies. We need leaders who will responsibly use Oregon’s natural resources, support small businesses and put Oregonians back to work. The results speak for themselves. When powerful unions control education policy, children too often come second. A new national analysis found that eight of the ten states with the lowest literacy scores have strong teachers’ unions. Our teachers are not the problem. They work hard every day. The problem is a centralized system where union leadership, bureaucracy and politics have more influence than parents, teachers and local communities. Oregon keeps spending more while our children continue falling behind in reading and math. More money, more mandates and more state control have not delivered better results. In 2027, I will push for: • More local control of our schools • Greater educational freedom for parents • Less state bureaucracy in the classroom • Oregon to opt into the new $1,700 federal Education Freedom Tax Credit This federal credit can help provide scholarships, tutoring, educational services and other learning opportunities for Oregon students but only if Oregon chooses to participate. With Oregon’s Q3 Economic and Revenue Forecast released today, I am responding to the results and Democratic leadership's attempts to shift the blame for Oregon's struggling economy: Oregon Democrats are desperately trying to blame federal policies for our struggles. But a recent WalletHub report ranking Oregon 49th in the nation for workforce participation proves that Governor Kotek’s anti-business agenda is what is actually driving employers and private investment out of our state. The hypocrisy is staggering. While Democrats complain about federal impacts, Governor Kotek is actively refusing federal HR 1 K-12 education scholarships that would bring direct financial relief to Oregon students and parents at zero cost to the state budget. I wrote in today's @WSJ: States refusing to step up to the plate on federal tax-credit scholarships will leave their students behind. Oregon is fast becoming that cautionary tale. Despite the Nation’s Report Card placing our state last in fourth-grade reading and math, Gov. Tina Kotek announced this June that she will not opt Oregon into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit program. Last November I joined fellow legislators in urging Gov. Kotek to participate. This program requires zero new state taxes. It simply allows people to claim a federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations to scholarship organizations—funds that cover private-school tuition, tutoring, special-needs services, and vital support for public-school students. Oregon must open doors for struggling students, not slam them shut. During the 2027 legislative session, I will introduce statutory legislation to bypass this executive roadblock and formally opt our state in. Until then, keep an eye on Oregon this November. Salem Democrats just showed us exactly where they are headed, and it isn't to the center. On Friday, Speaker Julie Fahey promoted DSA-aligned Rep. Farrah Chaichi to a Ways & Means Co-Chair position. While Oregon's working families get crushed by taxes, housing costs, & an exploding state budget, Salem refuses to course-correct. Instead, they’re handing the keys to the socialist wing of their party.
