No, it's just America's lust for large gas guzzlers. The smart for 2 cars were safe. The issue was a gas engine stuffed in was prone to fires in accidents, diesel in Eu. it had the same type of framing as indy cars, which people walk away at 200mph/320 kph crashes.

Ps I've been in auto repair since the mid-70s, where land barges started shrinking, then by the early/mid-90s, things started growing. At the height of shrinkage, I could fit 16+ cars off-street, when I shut down a few years ago, 6 trucks, which were the majority of repairs fit!
