Those nights weren’t special then. SNES. Big PC boxes. AIM open. Winamp playing. Burned CDs. A CRT glowing. Now you’d give anything for one more. 80s–00s vault.

There was a time when Goosebumps and Animorphs were on the bed, Rugrats was on the TV, and the whole afternoon still felt wide open. Just a little piece of growing up in the ’90s.

30 years ago today, MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries was released on PC. September 25, 1996. Instead of simply giving you missions, Mercenaries let you run the whole operation, choosing contracts, managing money and deciding how to equip your BattleMechs. Few things felt cooler in 1996 than sitting in front of a CRT with a joystick and pretending your desk was a BattleMech cockpit. Peak ’90s PC gaming.

24 years ago today, Stronghold: Crusader was released on PC. September 25, 2002. Build the castle. Keep the economy running. Survive the siege. Then realize three hours somehow disappeared. The Crusader Trail alone could keep you busy for weeks. Stronghold: Crusader was one of those PC strategy games you could install once and keep coming back to for years.

I still can’t believe I’m writing this in 2026. Heroes of the Storm is actually coming back. After years of basically sitting in maintenance mode, Blizzard is adding Xal’atath as a brand-new hero on September 28, with more updates apparently planned depending on how players respond. Blizzard is even giving away some free HOTS items this weekend. For a game many of us thought was finished years ago, seeing it come alive again feels pretty special.

31 years ago today, Command & Conquer was released. GDI vs. Nod. Tiberium fields. Base building. FMV mission briefings. And hours spent hearing “construction complete.” Command & Conquer didn’t just become a PC classic, it helped define what real-time strategy would become. One of the greatest eras of PC gaming was just getting started.

Halo 3 released 19 years ago today. If you were gaming in 2007, this felt bigger than just another game release. Midnight launches, packed stores, everyone on Xbox Live, Forge maps and late nights playing multiplayer with friends. And seeing that Legendary Edition Master Chief helmet sitting on the shelf felt like the coolest thing ever. The Xbox 360 era was something special.

Believe it or not, I genuinely love reading through all of your comments. The memories you share, the photos and videos that take you back to a certain time in your life, and the little moments you thought you'd forgotten. Sometimes, your stories bring back memories of my own. A certain place, a familiar feeling, or a time in life I wish I could visit just one more time. It's amazing how we can all come from different walks of life, yet share so many of the same memories. Thank you for sharing those memories and keeping a little piece of our childhood alive. ❤️

One of the best eras of PC gaming. Staying up way too late hunting for loot in Diablo, building your base in StarCraft, or spending hours playing Warcraft III. Those big game boxes on the shelf, the glow of the CRT, and weekends spent getting lost in these worlds. So many good memories. Would love to experience those days all over again.

If you grew up playing these, you had an awesome childhood.

POV: It's Friday night in the early 2000s. You just got home from Blockbuster with a movie and a bag of their buttery popcorn. The whole family is gathered around the TV, the lights are low, and that old CRT is lighting up the living room. No streaming, no scrolling, just a movie night with the people you love. These were some of the best nights.

Growing up in the early 2000s was something special. Friday nights at the movies, hanging out at the mall, signing yearbooks, and spending hours with friends doing absolutely nothing. We didn't realize it then, but those ordinary moments would become some of our favorite memories. If only we could go back for just one more day. ❤️

29 years ago today, Ultima Online was released. September 24, 1997. Before World of Warcraft, there was Britannia. Thousands of real players adventuring, trading, building homes, fighting and simply existing together in the same online world felt almost unbelievable in 1997. And the original PC box came with a cloth map, pewter pin, a month of play… and even Netscape Navigator. This was the internet era of PC gaming just beginning to show us what was possible.

Myst released 33 years ago today. If your family got a CD-ROM computer in the 90s, there’s a good chance you remember this game sitting nearby. Exploring that island, clicking on everything and trying to solve puzzles without having a walkthrough sitting in your pocket. Myst made owning a CD-ROM drive feel like you had just stepped into the future.

Myst was unlike anything else in 1993. No enemies to fight, no instructions telling you where to go. Just a mysterious island filled with puzzles, hidden clues, and strange machinery. You had to pay attention to everything, take notes, and figure out how the world worked on your own.

Spending hours on your friend's bedroom floor looking through cards, making trades, and thinking you had the best collection in the neighborhood. Those were the days.

POV: It’s 1994. X-Men is on TV, the room is lit by the glow of the CRT, and you don’t have a care in the world. Just you, your favorite cartoons, and a whole Saturday ahead of you.

Summer evenings in the early ’90s felt like freedom. Bikes in the street, sprinklers running, parents on the porch, and the streetlights coming on just as the sun started to fade. You stayed outside until the sky turned orange, and somehow those nights felt like they’d last forever.
