Object permanence is the understanding that things continue to exist, even when they can’t be seen.
And it’s not an understanding your baby comes equipped with. Indeed, during the earliest months of life, if you remove a toy - for example - from your baby’s line of sight you’ll find they react as if it was never there in the first place.
In this case, out of sight means out of mind.
But that all begins to change, typically between 7-10 months.
This little guy - shared to IG by AFVofficial - has a clear sense of object permanence and shows us in two ways:
First with his astonishment over dad’s sleight of hand and then with his efforts to track - and seek out - the ball as it moves into dad’s other hand.
What a fantastic illustration of his developmental milestone.
