6 Oct 1918, while serving as troopship carrying US soldiers in near hurricane conditions, HMS Otranto rammed by HMS Kashmir off Isle of Islay. Destroyer HMS Mounsey bravely came alongside & rescued c. 500 soldiers & crew, 21 swam ashore but c. 500 who remained on board died. #WW1

5 Oct 1535, Miles Coverdale (1488-1569) published first authorised English translation of Bible. He drew on work of the martyred William Tyndale. In 1539, he helped with Great Bible, so called due to its size. This was #Bible Henry VIII ordered be placed in every parish church.
