What Del Somerville did was wrong. But a 2 year prison sentence is obviously two-tier. Why is the British state punishing protestors harder than illegal migrants who break into our county and commit appalling crimes? Why do judges apply the principle of deterrence to sentencing protestors, and not to the illegal migrants who are terrorising women and girls across our country? Somerville got 2 years for swearing aggressively at the police and throwing a plastic bottle towards them. But for context: Maqbil Dhaheri arrived on a small boat and was sentenced in April 2026 for sexually assaulting a nurse. He escaped prison with a 12 month community order. Hussein Almiyyahi arrived in a small boat in April 2024 and was sentenced in May 2026 for four counts of sexual assaulting three women. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison. Tadi Alemeyeha arrived in July 2025 and was sentenced in February 2026 for sexually assaulting a woman and then threatening to keep her silent. He was sentenced for 18 months. This is why the British state has a legitimacy crisis. It exerts far more effort suppressing people’s concerns about immigration than actually fixing it. Reform will ensure the British government actually serves the British people again.

NEW: Andy Burnham is now reconsidering building the Newark Bypass - but at nearly TRIPLE the original cost. This is farcical. First Labour cancelled the Newark Bypass, ditching the contractor and years of planning. Now, after our campaign, they’re reconsidering building it - but at the cost of roughly £700 million, not £300 million. If they do change their mind, the documents show the project would run until *2038*. This is a clown show, not a government. How can local people and businesses have any confidence in this spectacular incompetence? How did the news break? It was snuck out in the construction press. Once again this government have treated local people as an afterthought. This road is a non-negotiable investment for Newark and Nottinghamshire. I won’t stop campaigning until shovels are in the ground. I am writing to the Transport Secretary demanding an explanation and will be raising this shambles in parliament. If Labour won’t build it, a Reform government will.

The big conservative welfare announcement saves £0.5bn, or about 0.5% of the projected increase in spending over the next five years.

The Tories are today re-announcing a welfare plan so weak the Lib Dems could have authored it. Why do they lack the courage to cut the benefits bill by even half as much as Reform’s £52 billion plan? The Tories still refuse to adopt Reform’s policies to: - End ALL foreign citizens accessing benefits - Make those claiming benefits who are fit and healthy work in their community for 20 hours a week - Eradicate the doubling in fraud and error Can Kemi really not get her backbenchers to sign off on proper savings? The truth is their fake “policy commissions” do not exist. Never did. They haven’t done the work. Their welfare policy is two and a half pages long. And it shows. Their announcement today doesn’t show any workings because their costings are badly wrong. They seem to assume that each of the 350,000 affected claimants is currently receiving the UC standard allowance for a single over-25 adult and that, therefore, each person moved to the Subsistence Allowance saves the exchequer £1,530 (350,000 x 1,530 = £535 million). But a large proportion of UC claimants receive smaller standard allowances, because they are under 25, in a couple, or already subject to sanctions. Moving these people onto subsistence allowance would therefore save less than £1530. Similarly, they have not accounted for the new incentive for people to move to health benefits, which are exempt, nor for the administrative cost of this system. The real saving would be more than £100 million lower. It was a nice attempt, rustled up in panic after Reform laid out our detailed plans. But only Reform have done the work to find the savings, which is why only we can raise the tax-free personal allowance to £15,000.

The UK is forecast to grow much slower than the US with inflation still stuck at around 3%. And that’s before the possible shock to diesel supplies from a Trump export ban. The only way out is to cut wasteful spending and pursue radical supply-side reforms to planning, energy, and welfare.
