@tetheredtoed1 tagged me into this thread and rather than going down the comments trying to explain to each person what thresholds scientists have to meet to get federal funding, let me explain it in one thread.
Not all science projects that deserve funding appear immediately rational to the general public. I recall @SarahPalinUSA criticizing "fruit fly research" during the McCain campaign, seemingly unaware that fruit flies are the primary model organism in modern genetics research.
