My thoughts surrounding
#Dorothy 🫰🏻 Don’t impose, don’t rush. Let emotions be understood and perceived naturally, in their own time.
I’m not against LGBTQ+ communities or anyone’s right to live with dignity and respect. My thoughts are only about how certain psychological and emotional concepts are being presented to young minds, especially in the context of the movie and the discussions around it.
The way women have been sexualised and portrayed as objects has, over time, become normalised in society and media. Similarly, I feel that some other less-understood emotional experiences are increasingly being presented as something that should simply be accepted or explored without enough context. In both cases, I believe we need to think about the possible impact of such normalisation, particularly on young minds.
The sexualisation of women has also had wider consequences for children. 3 lakh girl children are sexualy abused in the last 5 years. We are increasingly talking about child safety, good touch and bad touch, and the need to protect young girls from sexual abuse. Similarly these unexplained emotions will have impact for young boys as-well, off late a small percentage of boys are facing harassment’s as well.
Young minds are still learning to understand friendship, affection, attachment and attraction. A normal feeling of closeness or emotional connection with someone of the same gender should not necessarily create pressure to immediately question, label or reinterpret that emotion.
At the same time, relationships themselves have become increasingly complicated. Terms such as situationship, textationship, safety net, nanoship, sneaky link, FWB, benching, fexting and dry texting have become part of 2Kmodern relationship vocabulary. The thin line between care and possessiveness, friendship and attachment, or affection and dependence can sometimes become difficult for young people to understand. Even sustaining long-term relationships and marriages can feel increasingly challenging in today’s emotionally complex environment.
My concern is not about judging anyone’s personal identity or emotions. It is about being mindful of how we introduce relatively complex and less-understood psychological concepts to a generation that is already navigating significant emotional pressures.
Of late, in the name of education and awareness, several previously less-discussed subjects are being brought into the public conversation. Awareness is valuable, but perhaps it should come with maturity, context, sensitivity and proper guidance.
Let individuals understand their emotions at their own pace, without creating unnecessary confusion or making young minds feel that every unfamiliar emotion needs to be immediately labelled or explored.
We are already facing enough emotional complexity. Let’s give the next generation more clarity, understanding and space to grow.
