I would consider it a mercy from God if I could live as faithfully as this guy is dying. About the best thing I can say about a person is he makes me want to be a better man. If you are the praying type, spare a few words for Me. Sasse and his family.
Thx for the prayers — Turns out cutting out chunks of yer liver is no joke, man. Good news, bad news, and next steps… Good: big liver surgery last week successfully cleared out a bunch o cancer. (Pretty darn great — considering 9 mons ago, when told I had 3-4 months to live, surgery wasn't even an option.) Bad: Tests on the tumors show they were more advanced than we thought — meaning always-mutating tumors have developed some resistance tricks to our former treatment protocol. Bummer but that's life, and was eventually expected. Next: We're gunna change up treatment to carpet-bomb-chemo as much of the rest of the cancer as we can for a bit. Send chemo tips -- do NOT send more Nickelback promotional materials (am painfully aware they’ll be performing at the Hondo Rodeo Fest in Febr). Grateful to God for this extra time — both time w/ fam and time to fight. Can't say enough good things about… - daraxonrasib - MD Anderson’s incredible team of docs, nurses, techs, & researchers - my wife: Melissa rocks. She’s laughing-crying-fighting-prayin with me every day. Best human I know. - Corrie, Alex, and Breck are beyond awesome.

I loved this powerhouse panel of political reporters. One key insight? Becerra pre-Swalwell had a very different tone. Worth some of my time to notice the differences.

This is a fascinating report a SAT alternative. "the SB assessment, like other standardized tests, reflects and reproduces inequalities and opportunity gaps" Being poor sucks and no test is going to tell you what that student should have otherwise achieved. Test any way.
It was considered, and the recommendation was to not use it. Reasons here: regents.universityofcaliforn…

This taco spot on Calle Olvera in LA is legit. I'm told this street used to be packed with tourists and it is now largely vacant. The taco stand had a line but the rest of the street was mostly shut.

Friends on here had problems with water agencies. I asked several people why. Paired water General Managers with academic leadership experts and developed a leadership training program for mid-level managers. Training the 3rd co-hort today.

I normally pick a bar based on the bartender. No shade, but my favorite place in Santa Monica is short on atmosphere but long on sunsets and ocean views. I harshly judge LA people based on largely empty beaches.

Most comms would be better if you let your PR people cook. This is fact based take down from the perspective of a farmer. I love it!
Activist: "Farmers pump their cows full of antibiotics. It's in every glass of milk." Dairy farmer: "Do you know what happens if it is?" Activist: "People drink it." Dairy farmer: "The tanker gets tested at the gate. One cow's worth of antibiotic in 20,000 litres and the whole load goes down the drain. Every farm on the run that morning gets their milk tipped, and the farm that did it pays for all of it." Activist: "So you're saying it never happens." Dairy farmer: "I'm saying a treated cow on this farm gets red tape round her leg, goes to the back of the parlour, and her milk goes in a bucket for 6 days. I treat her like she's radioactive, because financially she is." Activist: "You still use them." Dairy farmer: "On a cow that's ill. Same as you. The vet writes it up, the date goes on the wall, and the wall's checked. Use on this farm is about half what it was 10 years ago, and that's every dairy I know." Activist: "Routine use in feed, then." Dairy farmer: "Illegal for years. Growth promoters went 20 years ago. You're describing a chicken shed in a country I don't farm in." Activist: "You can't prove it's not in the milk." Dairy farmer: "I can prove it 3 times a week, because they test it 3 times a week and send me the sheet. When did you last get a sheet on your oat drink?" Activist: "That's different." Dairy farmer: "It is. Nobody tests it. Mine's the most inspected liquid in your kitchen and it's the one you're scared of."

Government regulation is America's biggest impediment to cheaper energy and Mavria's success. This guy got a PhD in the single biggest factor in nuclear's success. Bet on him.
Tomorrow's episode is with Adam Blake (@adamblake), Founder of Mavria and former DOGE team lead at the Department of Energy. Adam built a commercial solar company to 2,000 projects, sold a software company to Vista Equity, and in early 2025 got on a plane to Washington. Two executive orders ended up assigning work to his team. One of those orders created a nuclear reactor pilot program at the Department of Energy. I asked him how it actually worked. "So this order called out this crazy ambitious goal of let's get three new reactors turned critical by July 4th, 2026. So this was a goal at the time, by the way, that everybody thought was impossible." "This executive order was also unique in the sense that it assigned implementation to the DOGE team at the DOE, which was me. So that allowed my team to really try and remove barriers and drive this as fast as we possibly could." "This is American entrepreneurship and capitalism at its best. You had these incredible entrepreneurs that were given a clear road. They organized private sector capital. This is not government picking winners or losers." In this clip, Adam explains what the DOE can do that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission can't, and why he says these guys crushed it.

I love to see this kind of proactive leadership from @BuffyWicks and Moses. Reconvene is the perfect group of practitioners #caleg needs to hear from. If we want to change housing in CA, need to hear from housing providers.
For years, you've read me complaining about CA governance, so now read something positive: Buffy Wicks, who chairs the CA State Assembly Appropriations Committee and who has helped lead the drive to relax supply constraints across the state, has agreed to lead a Breakout at Reconvene in October. She is coming specifically because she wants to hear from people who build and operate housing in California about all the ways state government interferes with us doing so profitably. If you are on the front lines and want to share your experiences / frustrations with someone who a. cares and b. is in a position to do something to help, I strongly urge you to join us. For more information, visit reconvene.com

A not so great way to lower the crime rate? Stop arresting people the police witness breaking into a home and threating people with a knife... repeatedly.
Still can’t believe the cops showed up to my apartment, saw a guy actively breaking in with a crowbar, threaten another tenant with a knife, admit to having broken into my apartment and live there for a week, apprehend him, tell me he’s done this a bunch of times to other homes in the neighborhood, and then, after all was said and done, tell him to “scram” and that I was going to get his stuff out of my apartment for him. What the actual fuck @LAPDHQ?

I believe that the United States of America is mankinds greatest human achievement. I think illegal immigration is wrong. I think the guy on the right is more American than this image by our government.

Paul is one of the ~3 most credible AI safety experts in the world. Co-invented RLHF, served at US CAISI, a real OG in LessWrong x-risk circles. (His early debates with Eliezer Yudkowsky are famous among the safety crowd and people still cite his "What Failure Looks Like" post from 2019.) He is joining the OpenAI nonprofit board now because he now believes "there is a meaningful risk that rapid acceleration in AI capabilities leads to catastrophic and irreversible loss of control in the very near term." Shit is getting real!

Race was an important topic and instead of engaging in a cultural exchange we largely retreated to our corners. Instead of debate, we exchange videos of Black teenagers behaving badly and academic gobbeldy-gook.
🚨 Da’Shaun L. Harrison at Socialism 2026 argues that the political deployment of GLP-1 drugs is “fascistic” because they exist in “a world fixated on genociding fat people.” “The political deployment of GLP-1s is fascistic, not because individuals take them, but because the conditions under which they become necessary are shaped by a world fixated on genociding fat people.” And to explain why that is supposedly fascistic, Harrison turns to Frantz Fanon and “Black flesh under colonial surveillance.” If GLP-1s are already “body fascism,” the dual and triple agonists are going to require an entirely new theoretical vocabulary.

Former Fox News host makes guest appearance on Russian propaganda channel praising "saint like" Putin. Authoritarianism is attractive to many people and it is being sold in different packages around our country. Fear is the common thread.
MAGA superstar and former Fox News host Napolitano goes on Russian propaganda network RT to praise Putin as "saint like" and promote the idea of Moscow targeting the EU with military strikes.
