After this evenings rain in New Market, Mother Nature provided for some beautiful scenery.

Rudes Hill is a 981-ft hill between the towns of New Market & Mt Jackson. The Hill is known for its strategically placed elevation on which many Civil War events occurred.

Kate Sperry, an 18 year old resident of Winchester who kept a diary noting every day life in the war-torn Shenandoah Valley. Her diary particularly gives us a look into how the younger generation viewed the conflict.

162 years ago today, the First Battle of Kernstown. The first major battle in the Shenandoah Valley. During the battle, soldiers of Co.G 27th Virginia & the 1st West Virginia fought over a stone wall. Both units were raised in the same town of Wheeling (West)Virginia.

Frederick Holliday was a Winchester Lawyer that rose from Captain of the ‘Mountain Rangers’ to command of the Stonewall Brigade’s 33rd VA Infantry. He was wounded at Cedar Mtn & served the rest of the war with the 2nd C.S. Congress. He later became the 38th Governor of Virginia!

Shenandoah People: Frederick Lander. A native of Salem, Mass, he found success as a poet in the early part of the Civil War & led a charge during the skirmish at the Bloomery Gap, protecting the B&O Railroad while routing the Rebels. Just weeks later, he died of pneumonia.
