We talk a lot about bat speed and attack angle as components of a swing, but I rarely hear much discussion around barrel face angle vs barrel trajectory angle in baseball. I think that is mostly because we traditionally do not think of them as two separate things. I remember having a conversation with @Justin_Sartori about this about a year ago. The direction the barrel is facing and the direction the barrel is moving are not necessarily the same thing. The blue vector represents bat face angle, essentially the direction the bat face is pointing. The red vector represents the horizontal component of barrel velocity, or the barrel path angle, HAA. Golf has looked at this relationship for a long time through club path and face angle because the interaction between the two has a major effect on ball flight. There is likely a really interesting baseball analog here. We can start asking how barrel orientation relates to barrel direction through the hitting zone. How does that relationship change approaching contact? What does the angular difference between the two look like at contact? And how does it relate to spray angle, exit direction, spin, and overall batted ball outcomes?
