In hindsight, I don't think dynamic global illumination was worth it in the end

okay before this escapes containment and people go "just press the bake lighting button 4head" production constraints are like. a thing you have to think about. i did a whole thread

Players discuss this most often when it comes to rendering? Like - the point of Nanite/Lumen IS NOT gigashit graphics for players. It's to smooth over a million iteration-blocking workflow issues... at a known runtime performance cost.

game performance is weird and cool and the decisions you make rarely exist on a sliding scale of "faster choice" vs. "slower choice" everything is context-dependent, and made out of particular trade-offs...

...and the better you know your hardware, tools, and game, the better-informed decisions you can make and player-facing conversations about this get tricky when techniques become marketing buzzwords

not that all choices are equal - they're very much not it's just weird to discuss in a collapsed space where some people are looking for knowledge, and others are looking for weapons

that said, it's always helpful to keep learning why you're doing what you're doing, so you're not at the mercy of your defaults not that you have to Do The Most All The Time, but if you're making a trade-off, know what you're getting out of it

I've been trying out Bakery for the first time, and its awesome. So much better than unity's built in solutions.

The sad truth that letting a engine like ue5 do the work for you is less time consuming. Even we beg and plead they'll always cut corners. All dlss did was extend their performance budget letting them worry less about optimization.

Feels like we need a lot more time until dynamic GI reaches baked quality and the cost is trivial. I also haven't seen many games actually make dynamic GI integral to their games (maybe make a game mechanic? Needing to see stuff with indirect light could intersting)

I remember a basic TCP/IP stack had the ZLib comp/decomp locked behind a $50 paywall, so I just downloaded a outdated semi-broken github project that cost $20 precompiled. The UE marketplace is a joke, one reason i don't use the engine.
