The new Sept. 8 solicitation says the agency is targeting five areas: extracting oxygen directly from Moon rock and dust, vertical solar arrays, radioisotope power, advanced manufacturing on the Moon and next-generation nanomaterials. NASA's broader plan goes much further with large pressurized habitats, nuclear fission power, lunar communications networks and heavy cargo logistics, with infrastructure buildout targeted for 2029–2032. From 2032 onward, NASA's architecture calls for assembling a permanent lunar outpost where astronauts can live and work for extended periods.
