We talk Rograkh & Thrasios, the brewer’s advantage, and why a deck needs more than a great goldfish. Plus tournament incentives, Sam’s case against fetchlands, and a childhood Ancestral Recall trade that deserves a moment of silence. @SamuelHBlack Watch here: youtu.be/iTn-cmsZdhk

Today's podcast is a little meta--discussing my process and approach to Magic and content creation, and how those relate to each other and studying Magic in general, with a dose of updates on decks I've been working on in the second half. youtube.com/watch?v=NKKipcmM…

Today’s Sam’s table covers a mix of Premodern and cEDH, as I discuss updates to the decks I’ve been playing recently with my reasoning. youtube.com/watch?v=io6pnTcT…

Someone just asked me for help building a commander deck for his girlfriend. I assumed from the fact that she wasn’t involved that she’s pretty new to Magic. My advise very neatly captures why I don’t play casual commander:

I should clarify that my point here wasn’t about the optimal way to introduce people to magic/commander or how to approach sharing a hobby with a partner, rather that the idea of walking on eggshells to avoid offending a casual commander pod of strangers doesn’t appeal to me.

And this isn’t to say it’s a common experience, but my early experiences involved running into some unwritten rules about proper things for decks to do, and I’d rather play in spaces where it’s expected that your deck can do whatever you want it to do.

Dandan tech: Depower I think it’s the perfect card for the format—tempo positive 2 for 1 that you have to work for that plays better on defense. Can also just fog+cantrip. Participates in card draw battles, combat, and grinding value.

Reality Fracture is an awesome set both for limited and cEDH. Today on Sam’s Table I’m looking at another new commander from the set, Grist of Saint Thalia, which I’ve had great early experiences with. youtube.com/watch?v=wR-LSU49…

I don’t know when exactly Twitter started putting replies from people I follow to people I don’t follow, which are usually about things I don’t care about. This changes bad and has lead to unfollowing several people I would never otherwise unfollow. Can I fix this in settings?

I made a short video about the announcement about changing booster packs and why I think giving fewer foil commons and uncommons is good, even if wotc’s announcement didn’t even try to argue that: m.youtube.com/watch?v=swnhdF…

Btw, if anyone’s interested in testing Library of Alexandria’s impact on commander, I recommend playing a game in which once per game each player can play any land face down as a Library and pay attention to the impact that has.

My expectation: players will do it sometimes, they will activate it sometimes, and doing so will help them. The player who does this will almost never win because the player with the better draw that doesn’t need to do this will win.

I know the audience for Old School is small, but I finished top 4 in a 287 person tournament with a deck I built that I played no games with before the tournament, and I think you might find the reasoning in such a simple format interesting even if you don’t play it…

Today’s Sam’s Table goes over the theory behind the deck, why it played so well, and all the other decks that made top 16 and how I’d sideboard against them. youtube.com/watch?v=4Cb0to4-…

Reality Fracture introduces tutoring for enchantments to green, which has never been able to do that. This is a huge change for green in commander. I discuss the implications for cEDH in this week’s Sam’s Table m.youtube.com/watch?v=IANXmt…
