🚨 Thierry Henry on Spain’s incredible comeback against England:
🗣️ Thierry Henry:
“England were 2–1 up at Wembley and, for a moment, you thought Spain were finally going to be punished.
“But this is where you understand the difference between simply playing football and understanding football.
“Spain did not panic.
“They did not start forcing long balls.
“They did not abandon their identity.
“They kept passing.
“They kept moving.
“They kept creating angles.
“And most importantly, they kept believing that the next pass would create the next chance.
“Look at the way they came back.
“Lamine Yamal scores early, England respond with Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane, and suddenly Spain are behind.
“But what happens?
“Spain go back to their football.
“Baena gets the equaliser in the second half, and then Oyarzabal finishes the comeback.
“That is not luck.
“That comes from a team that knows exactly how it wants to attack.
“Every time Spain have the ball, there are players moving around the ball. One player receives, another gives an option, another creates space, and suddenly England are running after shadows.
“That is the beauty of their football.
“They don’t need to rush the game to hurt you.
“They make you move.
“They make you chase.
“They make you lose your position.
“And then, when the space appears, they attack it.
“England had the lead, but Spain had something England could not take away from them — control of the football.
“And that is why I have to criticize England tonight.
“You are 2–1 up against Spain at Wembley. Fine.
“But you cannot spend the rest of the match allowing Spain to dictate where the game is played.
“You have to make them uncomfortable.
“You have to disrupt their rhythm.
“You have to stop the easy passes.
“Because if you allow Spain to pass, turn, pass again, move, receive and pass again, eventually they will find the door.
“And tonight, they found it twice.
“Baena brings them back.
“Oyarzabal completes the turnaround.
“Three goals from Spain, and you can see the same principle running through everything — movement, patience, technique and intelligence.
“This is why I respect Spanish football.
“They don’t change who they are because the scoreline changes.
“They were losing 2–1 and still playing like Spain.
“They didn’t suddenly become desperate.
“They didn’t throw the football away.
“They trusted the system.
“They trusted the players.
“And eventually England couldn’t live with it.
“England must learn from this.
“You cannot defend a 2–1 lead against a team like Spain by simply hoping the clock saves you.
“You have to control something.
“If you don’t have the ball, you must control the space.
“If you don’t control the space, Spain will control the game.
“And once Spain control the game, they can turn a match around before you even realise what is happening.
“Tonight, England had the advantage.
“Spain had the football.
“And in the end, Spain had the comeback.
“That is the difference.
“Spain didn’t win because they stopped being Spain.
“They won because they stayed Spain when the pressure was at its highest.
“And honestly?
“That is what beautiful football looks like.”
