🚨 BREXIT’S BORDER MASOCHISM This is what taking back control delivered to Britain’s meat industry: ❌ New certificates ❌ Duplicate inspections ❌ Refrigerated lorries delayed ❌ Shorter shelf life ❌ Higher veterinary and transport costs ❌ British consignments rejected over minute defects Brexit created an entire border bureaucracy around legitimate, traceable trade that previously moved freely. ☠️ Yet illegal meat, the genuine biosecurity threat, continues to exploit the holes in Britain’s post-Brexit border regime. Brexit is punishing compliant British exporters while failing to manage the real risk. 👏 The quickest fix is dynamic SPS alignment to eliminate routine checks, while simultaneously negotiating entry into the single market and customs union.

You cannot demand cheap food, more wildlife, higher welfare, lower emissions and beautiful countryside while refusing to pay the people delivering them enough to remain in business. Bankrupting the farmer destroys food resilience and nature.

She’s not wrong. The Single Market is a phenomenal invention… …and the Conservatives under Margaret Thatcher really helped develop it. Now that we’re outside it, our importers and exporters are filling 40 million pieces of paperwork per annum - according to HMRC.

How can the government possibly afford to help farmers produce food when Rolls-Royce is so much more deserving? It made £3.35bn in underlying pre-tax profit last year and is committing billions to share buybacks, yet demands £200m from taxpayers or threatens to manufacture elsewhere. Farm support is condemned as subsidy. Corporate support is celebrated as industrial strategy. Caviar for capital; gruel for those who feed us.

Yes that’s how livestock farming works but the assumption that every field used for livestock could instead efficiently grow food crops for humans is precisely the mistake. Much of Britain’s permanent pasture and upland grazing is unsuitable or uneconomic for continuous arable or horticultural production. Ruminants convert grass and forage humans cannot eat into milk and meat. Even on mixed farms, livestock turn grass, cover crops, crop residues and by-production protein for humans while manure returns nutrients and organic matter to the soil. Of course some land used for livestock could grow human-edible crops. But livestock land = wasted land that could feed humans is an enormous oversimplification. A resilient food system isn’t vegetables instead of livestock. It’s crops AND livestock, using different land for what it does best. This is the food chain.

Great to help @ByDonkeys again at our farm to deliver a powerful Brexit message. British farming, fishing and food are the sacrificial lambs of Brexit. Brexit has made Britain food insecure. We need to rejoin the EU to get back control of our food and be secure.
