A collective account of the Schnable Lab@UNL. Phenotyping, genetics, and genomics in maize, sorghum and their relatives. #cornhuskercorn Logo by @SciOfCarvalho
Hey, we know her! @Harshita17_ spotted this photo of @JensinaDavis participating in last year's Plant & Animal Genome mentoring program. Still a chance to sign up for this year's program (and catch up with us in San Diego in January).
Prof. @vla_torres of @unlagrohort and @UNL_PSI presents to the Plant Science Club on opportunities for undergraduate research combining genome editing, corn genetics, and artificial intelligence.
My field manager @Chidu_ullagaddi volunteered to show local farmers our sorghum diversity plots near Lincoln this weekend. Explains that we sometimes grow “bad” lines (diseased, too short/tall, tiny heads) to understand the genetics that can lead to future better varieties.
Checking in on one of our nitrogen experiments -- part of the @NECornBoard supported Nebraska Nitrogen Initiative -- from the air. Big thank you to the great research team up at @nebenreec who host and manage this site.
Waqar @WaqarAli325 and Chidu @Chidu_ullagaddi working late to set up phones, sensors and experimental plans. Our goal is 4000+ photosynthetic measurements in <8 hours.
Charlie Colvin, an REEU undergraduate from @psuplantscience is identifying candidate resistance genes to fungal pathogens using population scale RNA-seq. Nine weeks ago Charlie didn't code, today we're rushing to finished the paper before PSU needs him back.
Graduate student @WaqarAli325 setting up one of the first crosses of the field season in our corn genetics nursery on UNL's East Campus. Photo by @vla_torres.
Field scientist @Chidu_ullagaddi rides the planter as we get the last of our 2025 Genomes to Fields hybrid corn plots in the ground out at Havelock Farm. Part of our @NECornBoard supported project. (Photo: @Kyle__Linders)
Great talk on this morning on phenomics and sustainable water use for agriculture from Prof. Deniz Istipliler of @UniversiteEge! Glad he could travel the 10,000 kilometers and 36 hours speak here in Nebraska.
Great turnout at this year's ARPA-E Energy Innovation Showcase! Good to catch up with both old friends (thanks for stopping by Prof. Kim!) and a lot of engineers, programmers and investors what corn was doing at an energy conference.
James Schnable telling 3 stories in 15 minutes on using better algorithms and better data to:
1) Find the right traits, from @HongyuJin5
2) Find the genes controlling those traits, from @Harshita17_
3) Find sequences controlling expression of those genes, from @tross_michael.
Prof. Seema Sahay (@SahaySeema47) is using quanittative genetics to identify the regulators of non-photochemical quenching in C4 crops and improve primary photosynthetic productivity. @UNL_PSI research seminar series.
Most plant properties (phenotypes) are determined by a mix of genetics (G) and environment (E). But wouldn't it be simpler if some phenotypes were determined by genetics and others by environment? That's what ... (1/3)
Dr. Korth (@NateKorth)'s paper mapping genes in sorghum that create changes in human gut microbiomes fed different kinds of sorghum is out today in G3. doi.org/10.1093/g3journal/jk…
After eight months, the amazing lab pumpkin @LinaLpzc and co created for last year's halloween contest is finally starting to show signs of decay. Remarkable longevity for a striking piece of art.
Planted our research fields on May 15th. Six hot and rainy days later our corn is already up! Looking healthy so far. Photo credit and field visit: @Chidu_ullagaddi.
Different nonphotochemical quenching responses of maize genotypes to nitrogen deficit stress are associated with variation in photosynthetic productivity and biomass accumulation. Work from @SahaySeema47 & @MarcinGrzy in @JPlantPhysiolsciencedirect.com/science/ar…
Harshita Mangal awarded second prize for her lightning talk at the 2024 @CortevaUS Nebraska Plant Science Symposium, and takes home a poster prize as well. Nicely done, @Harshita17_ !
Kevin Dockery, a UNL undergrad characterizing sorghum Cas9 edits as part of our collaboration with Prof. Brandi Sigmon @UNLMicro, receives poster prize at the Nebraska Plant Science Symposium. Kevin will be leaving us soon to begin his PhD in molecular biology. Congrats!
Three members of our lab -- Waqar (@WaqarAli325), Ramesh (@RameshKannaMat1), and Vladimir (@vla_torres) -- explain their work studying genes controlling photosynthesis, metabolism, and the expression of other genes at the 2024 Nebraska Plant Science Symposium.
Amany Gomaa (@AmanyAteaa) and Harshita Mangal (@Harshita17_) representing our lab at the 2024 Nebraska Plant Science Symposium. Nicely done, both of you!
Different nitrogen treatment blocks going in as we prepare for this summer's research work. We're studying the ways crop genetics and management decisions change how much nitrogen corn needs to maximize economic returns. Supported with funds from @NECornBoard.
Zhongjie Ji is a @MSU_PRI alumn and the newest @UNL_PSI Heuermann postdoctoral scholar. Will be working with our lab and @UNL_Phenomics to translate new plant phenotyping technologies to the field. Welcome Zhongjie!
Hi folks, in the lab we are looking for those genes which mutants are not displaying any visible phenotypic changes. If you like, please find more information below on how to share these with us or directly contact @NikeeShrestha2 #maizemeeting2024#MGC2024
Improving corn resilience using new genetic and sensor technologies by @addie_maize. Thank you to @unlagrohort & @CropsUNL for supporting her visit. Standing room only turnout in the room.
.@LinaLpzc, @NikeeShrestha2, and all the others involved put together a prize winning pumpkins. on their prize winning pumpkin. Congratulations and happy halloween!
James Schnable @szintri explained how differences in the kinds of data collected by automated systems are already changing the ways we use quantitative genetics to link genes to functions in plants. Part of the agricultural robotics workshop at #IROS2023.
A big thank you to 6 grad students, 4 techs, 2 postdocs and 2 professors who spent this Saturday harvesting and husking corn. One field harvested, three more to go. #cornhuskercorn
The robot hard at work in our cornfield yesterday. One of several PhenoBot 3s produced by our talented collaborator Lie Tang at @ISU_ABE. Part of our @usda_nifa supported phenotyping project testing hundreds of kinds of corn the eastern edge of Iowa to western edge of Nebraska.
