French Bulldog Benji weighed just 5.3kg, with his ribs, spine and hip bones painfully prominent. Bichon Frise Pixie weighed only 2.9kg and was buried beneath filthy, tightly matted fur. Vets concluded Benji had been starved for a “long period of time”. Pixie had to be sedated to remove her matted coat, only for vets to discover liver disease. Sadly, euthanasia was deemed the kindest option. Their owner, Danielle Southern, 30, of Saunby Close, Garston, admitted two animal welfare offences. At Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, she received an 18-month community order, was ordered to pay £500 costs and was banned from keeping animals for 10 years. Benji survived, recovered and found a new home. Pixie never got that chance.
