From picking potatoes as a child in Caribou to working on behalf of Maine’s communities, small businesses, and first responders, I have always been proud of my Aroostook County roots and the strong work ethic they instilled in me. Maine teachers are devoted to educating our children and strengthening our communities. They deserve to receive every dollar they earned. That’s why I never stopped working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the Social Security Fairness Act and ensure that teachers and other public servants can retire with the full benefits they earned.

It was an honor to attend today’s Blue Mass in Lewiston as we mark 25 years since the September 11th attacks. We remember the lives lost that terrible day, the heroes who ran toward danger, and the first responders who continue to answer the call every day. Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting a true American hero. 25 years ago this morning, Kevin Tolan was one of the NYPD officers who responded to 9/11. He was supposed to be undergoing surgery that morning. Instead, he put on his uniform, raced to the World Trade Center, and answered the call to rescue others. Joseph Viggiano, Kevin’s partner, was tragically killed on 9/11. In addition to the invisible wounds Kevin has carried ever since, he now battles the health-related repercussions of his selfless, heroic actions. 9/11 represented the largest single day loss of first responders in American history. “Never forget” calls us not only to remember the tragedy of 9/11, but also the courage and sacrifice of heroes like Kevin, his fallen partner Joe, and so many other firefighters, police officers, EMTs and others, and every innocent life lost that day. The passage of 25 years has not dimmed our memory or diminished our gratitude — no amount time ever could. It was an honor to meet Kevin and his wife Kit in Windham and thank them both for a sacrifice to big to truly put into words.

Twenty-five years ago today, a crisp, beautiful late-summer morning became one of unimagined horror. Those of us who lived through September 11, 2001 will never forget where we were the moment we learned of the attacks or the helplessness we felt trying to reach loved ones near and far, waiting for word that they were safe. Nearly 3,000 innocent lives were taken that day. Today, we remember them all including those from Maine - Robert and Jacqueline Norton, Robert Jalbert, James Roux, Stephen Ward, and Commander Robert Schlegel and their loved ones. We also remember the heroes who rushed toward danger to save others, and the unity that followed in the difficult days after. A quarter century has passed, and many Americans alive today weren't yet born on 9/11. They may never fully understand what that day felt like, but it is our responsibility to make sure they also never forget what happened, and why it must never happen again.
