President Trump has a habit of rolling out the red carpet for our adversaries, while punching our allies in the mouth. He made the decision that it is okay to sell our most sophisticated chips to China. At the upcoming summit, the President could make the decision to stop providing those chips, and slow down the progress that the Chinese are able to make on dangerous AI models.

There are reports that Chinese companies are providing information to Iran to target American service members and facilities. President Trump has a responsibility, as commander-in-chief, to raise this issue with China and establish clear red lines. If he doesn’t, what message does that send to U.S. forces about how much their lives are valued?

Ahead of this week’s meeting with China, President Trump has said he will consider allowing Chinese automakers to set up shop and build cars in the United States. If that happens, it is the beginning of the end for U.S. auto manufacturing. That is not going to happen on my watch as a Michigan senator.

Rumors that Chinese automaker BYD’s CEO will accompany President Xi Jinping to meet President Donald Trump in Washington this week have triggered warnings from U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., and a broad coalition of auto industry groups, who fear Trump may grant the world’s fifth-largest automaker access to the U.S. market in exchange for permission to build a U.S. assembly plant. Doing so would allow the automaker to establish a beachhead in the second-largest auto market, threatening North American automakers, suppliers and dealers, the senator said in a social media video posted Sept 22. “This is quite literally an attempt by Chinese companies to kind of get their foot in the door of the American market. It’s just step one,” Slotkin said. “What they really want is to be able to bring in their cars from China, assembled in China, and sell them in the United States.
