ALT Kara Gotsch, Executive Director of The Sentencing Project, released the following statement: “Cruel and excessive prison sentences that have overwhelmingly harmed Black communities have been the cornerstone of federal drug policy for generations. Today’s commutations from President Biden are a welcome relief for countless families who have endured punishments for loved ones that far exceed their utility. The Sentencing Project commends President Biden’s bold, corrective use of his clemency powers which will help define his legacy. American communities, disproportionately Black and Brown, have long borne the scars of the Drug War. Extreme and racist sentences for crack cocaine offenses tore apart families. Children grew up visiting their parents behind bars. Those parents are now elders, yearning to hold their grandchildren. Justice is served by allowing these individuals to return home. Their debt to society was long ago paid.”

ALT What is Second Look? Currently, incarcerated people can only re-examine their sentences by petitioning the governor. House Bills 4556-60 would allow people in prison to petition their judge for a reduced sentence if they've served at least 20 years and are no longer a risk to the community.
ALT Correct the Past - Protect the Future: 5400 incarcerated people in MI are serving life, even though many have reformed and are not a danger to the community. This law would create opportunities to release people who are safe to return to their communities.
ALT Second Look MI is racial justice. 51% of Michigan's incarcerated population is Black, while Black individuals only make up 14% of our total state population. In the Second Look eligible group, Black individuals are even more over-represented. Everyone deserves a fair chance to prove their rehabilitation and commitment to bettering their communities.
ALT Prison costs us too much. MI spends 47000 per prisoner annually. That's over 1.5 billion a year. The aging incarcerated population, in particular, is raising healthcare costs. Michiganders need money for our schools, homes, and communities. With less money going to incarceration, we can instead invest in hiring and retaining our teachers. To truly keep Michigan safe and meaningfully use precious public funds, we must pass the Second Look Sentencing Act.
ALT It’s an emotional day for our country. It’s been a long election cycle, and Americans in every corner of our nation are processing the results. As with any transition of power, there is plenty of uncertainty ahead. But we do know two things for sure. First, progress in building a more humane and effective criminal legal system is possible. Second, The Sentencing Project will do everything in its power to advance the change we desperately need. We know this because we’ve been at this for decades. Since opening our doors in 1986, we’ve seen all sorts of election results and partisan divides. Regardless, there have always been opportunities to work across the aisle and achieve a better criminal legal system. Is it hard? Yes. Does it take time? Absolutely. But can we do it? Resoundingly yes. Today’s political climate may seem more polarized than ever. And the challenges we face are indeed daunting. But as we’ve seen time and time again, we can find common ground & build a better tomorrow
