I always like to point people to a conveniently timed July 2001 appearance by Ehud Barak on Charlie Rose, less than two months before 9/11, because it captures just how much of the political framework that would dominate the post-9/11 era Israel was already trying to establish beforehand. Barak frames Palestinian resistance, and the Palestinian cause more broadly, as part of a much larger global terrorism problem, warns that the threat extends far beyond Israel, and effectively urges the United States and the West to understand Israel’s war against the Palestinians as one front in a wider civilizational struggle against terrorism. In other words, before the United States had even adopted the language of the “Global War on Terror,” Barak was already articulating much of its underlying logic and positioning Israel as the West’s frontline state in that fight.
25 years ago today a bunch of important people skipped work for no reason. I wrote about them at the link in my bio
