Happy Chuseok! Today is Korean Thanksgiving. 🇰🇷🌕 For generations, Chuseok has called Koreans home. On the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, families across Korea have gathered to share the fruits of the harvest, make songpyeon (half-moon-shaped rice cakes), remember those who came before them, and spend time with the people who gave them their name, their history, and their home. But that tradition is sadly changing. This year, only 63% of Koreans say they plan to meet family members who live separately during Chuseok — down from 68% last year and 70% during Seollal (Lunar New Year) earlier this year. Among Koreans in their 20s and 30s, that number is just 52%. And some of Chuseok's oldest traditions are disappearing even faster. Only 27.3% of Korean households say they plan to hold traditional ancestral rites this Chuseok. A decade ago, that number was 74.4%. Of course, traditions change. Not every custom needs to be practiced exactly as it was centuries ago. But something is lost when a holiday built around family, heritage, memory, and inheritance slowly becomes just another day off from work and school. A holiday like Chuseok is supposed to remind Koreans that that we did not begin with ourselves. We inherited a language we did not invent. A culture we did not create. A history we did not live through. A country built and defended by generations before us. And with inheritance comes responsibility. We should know where we came from. We should honor our parents and grandparents. We should preserve what is good, true, and beautiful. And we should leave our children something worth inheriting. Sadly, too many Koreans (and people in the first world) are forgetting this in pursuit of hedonism, materialism, and indulgence. Today, I thank God for my family, for my Korean heritage, and for the generations whose sacrifices made our lives possible. Modernization does not have to mean forgetting. Tradition survives only when the next generation decides it is worth carrying forward. 풍성하고 행복한 한가위 보내세요!
