A tribute to Dwight Powell
People who weren’t Luka fans in 2018 will never fully grasp what those early years felt like for the ones who were. And no player embodied the dysfunction of Cuban’s roster-building more than Dwight Powell.
In Luka’s rookie season I wasn’t bothered by his presence, but after the disastrous summer of 2019, Dwight became the starting center. I wasn’t thrilled at first, but the season started really well for the Mavs. I still clearly remember November 2019: Luka averaged 30-10-10 for the month, won Player of the Month, and Dwight was lethal as a rim-runner. What a 20-year-old Luka managed to do with that flawed roster is not talked about enough. At the time, they were the best offensive team in NBA history, but they were far from a contender.
Then, out of nowhere, Dwight suffered an achilles injury on January 21, 2020, and he was never the same again. Boban took his spot, but just three weeks later on March 11, the NBA played its final game before the COVID shutdown and interestingly enough, it happened in Dallas.
In the following years, Luka played with Boban, Cauley-Stein, Christian Wood, JaVale McGee, Richaun Holmes, and a few others. As bad as that was, Dwight somehow always found his way back into the rotation. And we fans had to enjoy watching his famous ‘tap-bounds’ that lead to so many easy baskets for the opponents, along with his infamous ‘face smacks’, and defensive inability to protect the rim. But he was fighting and clawing, more than anyone on the team: It just wasn’t good enough. No serous center (or strong power forward) feared him, they just put their palms on his head and dunked over him. It was not his fault, and he was such a nice guy, but I was so frustrated. I remember countless sleepless nights being upset over Powell. But in reality I was upset over the FO and the poor roster building, not him personally. It wasn’t his fault.
Then, in 2023–24, rookie Lively finally joined the team, and I couldn’t believe that Luka finally has an actual center on the team. Soon after Dallas traded for Daniel Gafford and for about five months, from February to June 2024, Luka at last had two decent centers at the same, the first time in his career! I was so hyped, but that was short-lived, because as we know, halfway through the following season, they traded Luka away and he had to start over again.
But all this time Dwight stayed in Dallas. And I hoped he would retire a Maverick. I hoped things had changed, that the front office would finally show some decency again and value loyalty. I thought there was no way they’d get rid of the 15th guy on the roster, a true Mavericks legend. They are not contenders. The guy who played alongside Dirk from 2014–17 and during his farewell season in 2018–19. The guy who was there through COVID in 2020–21, started Game 7 in Phoenix in 2022, cheered his teammates on during the 2024 Finals run, and helped holding the team together after they made the stupidest trade of all time in 2025.
And now they’ve cut him.
They cut the guy who gave his entire career to this franchise. Just like Dirk. Just like Luka. But this is what they do. And this is why I can never forgive them. Because it’s a reminder that nothing has changed. To the big suit it’s all just business. Loyalty means nothing.
And that genuinely makes me sad. Because I suffered through so much watching Dwight play, yet at the same time, I came to admire him for the exceptional human being he was and is. His story could be turned into a movie, but unfortunately Mavs blew it and destroyed the ending.
Very few people will probably relate to this rant. But to those who do, I feel your pain.
