π #NFL Week 1 | The Melbourne Card π¦πΊ
NFL Promises Made:
π 2U π 49ers +4.5 (-113/1.88)
NFL Promises Kept.
The Blender has done his homework this offseason. Time to make it 2-0 on the season.
π Hereβs Why π
You know what I like to do after a 16-hour flight across the Pacific? Play a divisional football game against a team that's been living there for a week.
To be fair, the Rams have thought this through. The whole idea is to skip acclimating to Australia entirely: stay on California time, sleep on the plane, kick off in what still feels like an early-evening window, then get home without spending the opening weeks of the season teaching everyone's body clock how to cross the Pacific twice.
It's clever. Maybe it works.
I just hope McVay has spent as much time preparing for the healthiest, most locked-in version of the 49ers he's seen in a while.
Because San Francisco built this trip around the game, not the travel. They got to Melbourne more than a week early, got settled, practiced there, and showed up to play a divisional game rather than survive one. And for once, they've actually got the people they want to play it with.
Bosa is back. Kittle is back. Purdy is back under center. McCaffrey is healthy. Warner is back. The receiver room is still a little improvised, but the spine of the team is intact.
That's a very different version of San Francisco from the one people seem to have in their heads.
The Rams, meanwhile, aren't quite the fully realized monster everyone spent August pricing. Aaron Donald didn't even make the trip. And that matters, obviously, because the frightening part was never just "Myles Garrett is really good." It was Garrett screaming off the edge while Donald wrecked the interior and made every protection call miserable.
We're not getting that version yet.
The recent head-to-head doesn't say what people think it says, either. Mac Jones started both games last year, and the one San Francisco won came as an 8.5-point underdog at SoFi.
Zoom out and it gets worse for the number. Shanahan is 11-8 against McVay, and of McVay's eight wins, only four came by more than a field goal. Now Purdy is back, Bosa is back, and the Rams are laying 4.5 in a rivalry where they almost never win by 4.5.
Too. Many. Points.
Maybe the Rams are better. They probably are. But San Francisco is healthy, prepared, already acclimated, and treating this like the road divisional game it is, while L.A. is asking a lot of a roster that still isn't quite the version everyone fell in love with.
And then, sure, there's the small matter of the 16-hour flight.
I'll take the points.
Best of luck, Super Team.
