Almost like monopolies are something the government needs to intervene in
I'm gonna spell this out because this issue is deceptively subtle: 1. The Steam client and infrastructure is somewhere between "not that hard" and "trivial". It's a download service attached to a payment processor with a smattering of services on the side. Cloud providers handle all the infrastructure these days. 2. Steam takes 30% of gross revenue; ostensibly for the privilege of using these services, but in reality it is purely to get access to the massive Steam userbase. 3. Steam users love Steam and having their whole library in one place. It works. It's dependable. It has sales and cards and achievements, oh my! 4. PC developers have no option but to distribute through Steam or lose the vast majority of sales. Not releasing on Steam destroys the business model. 5. Therefore, no amount of competition will ever unseat Steam. People post-hoc rationalize this with memes about how gracious Gabe is. And how brilliant their services are. But realistically, no avid Steam user wants other stores to succeed. The mere existence of other stores risks splintering their precious collection. They are "all in" on Steam. Invested. Even if an alternative were objectively better, by whatever metric you care about, it would still be of no interest to Steam users. They would in fact find it to be a problem and a threat to their investment. Competition in this space is not only uninteresting to most Steam users, it's actively denigrated! The CONSEQUENCE of this situation, is that 30% of all gross revenue is siphoned out of the PC games industry into a black hole. It doesn't recirculate into studios. It doesn't pay any bonuses. It doesn't fund any sequels or DLC. This is a particularly insidious tax because it's well hidden. It's a second order effect. Most Steams users don't know, and the few that do never consider the aggregate effect this has on their favorite hobby. It's undeniable that, at this point in history, Valve could EASILY lower the distribution fee while maintaining healthy margins. But they don't have to. Users are locked into Steam and therefore developers are stuck paying 30% of gross revenue to Valve. The irony is that Steam users, the very ones maintaining this unbreakable stalemate, would benefit the most from a better financed game development ecosystem. I don't think this is fixable. It's just sad.
Community note
Steam calculates its revenue share on net revenue after adjustments for refunds, chargebacks and taxes, not gross revenue. It funds Steam's platform services and infrastructure including distribution, Workshop, multiplayer tools, cloud saves and discovery features. partner.steamgames.com/doc/finance/pa… partner.steamgames.com/doc/finance/ta… partner.steamgames.com/doc/feature

Crazy how effectively MAGA was able to pivot the discourse such that wanting to literally coup the government is considered a mainstream right position and if you act like it's actually fringe in any way you're an alarmist scold
Nobody on the far right has any actual power or influence in the Republican Party. Every time they run for office, they lose in a landslide. James Fishback: Lost by 37 points. Dan Bilzerian: Lost by 38 points. Casey Putsch: Lost by 65 points. Now let’s compare that to the far left. El Sayed: Won Primary. Angie Nixon: Won Primary. Francesca Hong: Lost by less than a point. Zohran Mamdani: Won Election. Troy Jackson: Party selected. It’s not even close. The far left is a way bigger and more serious threat than the far right.

"Democracy in one country"
Earnest take: I think it’s probably not healthy for the practice of democratic self-government that so many people have developed strong rooting interests in elections in countries they don’t live in.

Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

I get what she's saying here (no wide scale death camp program; only haphazard efforts to deploy force to manipulate the election; no ground troops in Iran) but surely it was predictable that people would read it in bad faith
I thought Trump 2 was gonna be way worse. Every day now I wake up with a euphoric sense of relief

Anyone who genuinely let's "IQ" shape their worldview is ultimately opposed to democracy
There’s a lot of seemingly simple concepts that are hard to grasp for someone with an average IQ (inflation comes to mind), but Probability is something I’d wager only 5% of people *truly* understand The best example of that is how people react to electoral forecasts

If you believe this framing, where a mythical "legitimate protest movement" has now gone away replaced by an "illegitimate mob" you are entirely a slave to the conservative media ecosystem and cannot honestly consider yourself a left-winger
Norwegian state media is framing the French protests as having been "couped" by "anarchists who detest the state and capitalism" and "nihilists" who only want to loot, classic

This is murder. This is a murder that was partaken in by the entire political establishment and the NHS. It is a murder of a person for no other reason than simply because she was trans. Nobody will go to jail. Nobody will suffer any consequences. But they all murdered Joelle.

Dragon Age 2 has the best storytelling, pacing and character work of the franchise and I'll die on that hill.
Crazy how they made this absolute masterclass in storytelling and pacing and character work and then never released any sequels. Oh well!
