Sunday's Spotlight on DEEP Clearing:
Chapter 1 is called Life Cycles. It sits in Rolf Dane’s DEEP Clearing, the third edition, on page 16.
The chapter does not invent a new calendar. It says every event, every body, and every nation already runs a cycle, and that a cycle can be completed instead of left open.
Dane starts with the old picture. The Vedas, the ancient Indian books of wisdom, put it this way: from chaos comes birth, then growth, then full growth, then decay, then death, then chaos again.
He applies it to a fly, a house, a mountain, and an empire. Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is his picture of a nation running the same cycle as a body. The difference is only the time and the scale.
He then says the old picture is an appearance. What we call destruction is still a creation. The Actual Life Cycle has five steps, all named as a form of creating:
Create is the first bringing into being. Continuous-create is the maintenance that keeps a car, a health, or a state standing. Counter-create is a new creation set against an old one. No-creation is the limbo where decay creeps in, attention is still hooked but nothing is finished. Nothingness is the completed cycle, filed in the past, with no attention left on it.
The chapter is useful because it takes accident out of a fall. A closed state, a ruined land, a chronic pain is not weather. It is a cycle that was started and not finished, or a creation set against another creation.
The limit is plain. Completing a personal cycle does not rebuild a city or end a war. However it sets free the attention the open cycle has been using, and this attention can be invested in new and/or larger cycles.
Dane writes that "destruction is better expressed as Counter-creation. It’s a creation hitting smack against something that was already there."
A wrecking ball, a missile strike, a policy that flattens what was there is still someone’s creation. The person who loses the house calls it destruction. The person who wants the lot calls it clearing the ground. The act is the same.
He also writes that there is "creating and knowing one is creating" and "creating and NOT knowing one is creating."
A pain that returns in the car years after the knee has healed is still being created, in the present, by a decision made in the shock. The session’s work is to re-create that moment knowingly, find the decision, and stop holding the counter-create. Then the cycle can safely be filed away.
Nothing "just happens". A mind starts the cycle, and an office multiplies it. An unfinished cycle traps attention. Clear the small personal cycles first. Then the freed attention can sit with the larger field.
** Older literature **
Two old lines set the horizon beside each other.
The Vishnu Purana, in H. H. Wilson’s translation, says that at the end of the Kali age "the minds of those who live at the end of the Kali age shall be awakened, and shall be as pellucid as crystal." Pellucid means clear through, like still water.
Hopi traditional elders, among them Dan Katchongva, Thomas Banyacya, and Martin Gashweseoma, speaking toward the United Nations in 1992 and 1993, put the same turn in another language.
They said the earth will become new as it was from the beginning, that flowers will bloom again, that wild game will return to barren lands, and that those who are saved will share everything equally, recognize the Great Spirit, and speak one language.
Their vision was a level of life where land is free, water is free, there are no boundaries, and there is freedom of spiritual understanding.
One line names the cleared mind. The other names the world that only a clear mind can keep creating. Completing unfinished cycles is the practical step between them.
** Connection to today's posts **
On Friday near Abu Falah, masked Israeli settlers burned olive trees and cars and beat Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine. On Saturday near the Christian village of Taybeh, seven settlers on ATVs attacked French, Belgian, and Polish diplomats.
The olive cycle is continuous-create. The burning is counter-create. The larger conflict has not been filed.
On 16 October in Baku, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Israeli President Isaac Herzog to stop and reverse West Bank settlements. Wang called the Palestinian question the greatest historical injustice of this century. In 2024 Beijing brought Hamas and Fatah to a paper that was never carried out.
That paper is no-creation: the cycle sits in limbo, the scene keeps deteriorating, and attention stays hooked.
Israel holds Knesset elections on 27 October. Polls show a near deadlock between Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc and the opposition led by Gadi Eisenkot.
The United States has paid about 3.8 billion dollars a year in military financing, plus large extra packages since 2023. Netanyahu has said he wants to taper that aid to zero. The money and the settlements continue. The decision does not.
Rome is the book’s picture. Gibbon wrote the decline and fall of the Roman Empire as one long cycle that reached decay and then ended.
The Ottoman Empire is the other famous one: the “sick man of Europe,” a state that kept the old form while creation had stopped, until 1922.
The Soviet Union is the short one: built in 1917, held by continuous-create, then filed in 1991 when the maintenance stopped.
A finished cycle can be left. An unfinished one keeps the next round on the same ground.
Do not spend your energy on the burned grove, the open paper or the controversial foreign aid if you are not directly involved. Instead, use the time to sort out your own unfinished cycles.
Plan for some sessions if emotional pain keeps you from facing an issue. Unexpected new avenues will open up for you once fresh energy is flooding your space.
A clear mind is your most important tool. It is also the place where the next cycle you want to start finds a clean slate.
