"Christ conquered the devil with the same weapons the devil used against us: a virgin, a tree, and death. These tokens of our demise have now become the tokens of our victory. Instead of Eve, there is Mary; instead of the tree of knowledge, there is the wood of the Cross; and instead of Adam's death, there is the death of Christ." St. John Chrysostom

Hidden in English place names is a secret code of invasion and conquest. Vikings, Romans, Saxons, and Normans all stamped their languages onto the landscape. Here's how to decode any English place name — and instantly know who conquered that spot 1,000+ years ago... 🧵

Transfiguration the bridge between Epiphany (Jesus showing up) and Lent (the road to the cross). The story has three parts: 1. The Mountain: stepping away 2. The Moment: see Jesus 3. The Mission: to the cross And so we now prepare for Lent… facebook.com/share/r/166SHUa…

✨ Everything may not be as it seems ✨ Jesus’ teaching is full of hope, wisdom, perspective, and encouragement. What you think a situation is… may not be what it truly is. The Gospel reading for this week is Luke 6:17-26, the Sermon on the Plain: A thread…

• Even in poverty, there is riches • Even in hunger, there is satisfaction • Even where there is tears, there will come joy Yet… • You may stand for what is good and right and be hated. Similarly: • Being rich may bring consolation, for now.

• A full stomach can still leave you empty. • Laughter doesn’t always mean lasting joy. And… just because people speak well of you— Does it mean you are on the right path? Jesus teachings turns everything upside down. #Faith #Perspective #Luke61726 #Wisdom #HopeInJesus

The Foolish Pharisee Thoughts From the Gospel readings yesterday and today. The Pharisees turned up and they criticised. Lord, help me to deal with those foolish Pharisee thoughts in my own mind so that when I turn up I may bring the fruits of a life grounded in Your love. Amen

Reminds me of the readings from Sunday. Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof…

Mark 6:30-34 <30>The Apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. <31>And he said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.

<32>And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. This is the Gospel reading for today. Rest is essential, mandated by Jesus. Rest is not defeat, it is a pause. Rest is allowing time to breathe, reflect and heal. Seems quite apt for a Saturday.

This Sunday the gospel reading is Luke 5:1-11. Luke is a book in the Bible that tells of Jesus life and work. At the beginning of chapter 5 there’s a beautiful recalling of an inspiring event. Simon (Peter) is exhausted, he has just done a full night shift…

From that moment Peter leaves behind the ordinary life and what’s familiar to pursue something far greater and follow Jesus. It’s a reminder that when we trust and act on His calling, we open ourselves up to all sorts of opportunities and a life less ordinary.
