The Stacks Genesis Bond, launching ~September 10, will mark the start of Bitcoin Staking. Institutions such as @UTXOmgmt, @21shares and @HashKeyCloud will be part of the initial cohort. Bitcoin is becoming a productive asset on Stacks.
Bitcoin Staking arrives on Stacks at Bitcoin block 966,350. The Genesis Bond opens the first bonding period on ~Sept 10. For the first time in crypto, self-custodial Bitcoin Staking earns native BTC on the Bitcoin L1. This is productive Bitcoin. TL;DR, two ways in 👇 1/4.

All previously staked STX unlocked at the PoX-5 hardfork activation. To keep earning in the first PoX-5 cycle, you must restake before Bitcoin block 962,050. Restaking also comes with an upgrade: holders can now change the reward address without missing a cycle.

The SIP-045 hard fork reinstated the 1,000 STX block reward on July 30. Total supply at the April 2028 Bitcoin halving moves from approximately 2.10 billion under the prior schedule to approximately 2.16 billion under the restored reward, a difference of 2.9% over the next 21 months. Extended through April 2030, total supply moves from approximately 2.26 billion under the prior schedule, which steps down to 250 STX per block at the 2028 halving, to approximately 2.40 billion under the restored reward, a difference of 6.2%. Annual issuance changes as follows: 2026 (6.4% to 7.8%), 2027 (6.6% to 7.9%), 2028 (4.8% to 6.3%), 2029 (3.6% to 5.2%), roughly 1.5 percentage points per year. Figures beyond April 2028 assume the 1,000 STX rate continues unchanged and represent a ceiling. The rate is provisional: SIP-045 mandates an Economic CAB review ahead of PoX-6, where emissions will be reviewed for potential reduction, with PoX-6 expected before the April 2028 halving. Actual supply through April 2030 will be at or below these projections. Issuance peaks in 2026 and 2027 at roughly 7.8% and declines from there under every scenario: SIP-031 endowment emissions follow a fixed, declining schedule, and the Economic CAB review can only hold or lower the Coinbase rewards. For context, 2025 emissions across the top 50 chains by market capitalization averaged 15.9%, with a five-year median of 8.17% (source: Artemis). Stacks sits at approximately half that average inflation in its peak year, and below the 5-year median. stx.is/sip045-ratified stx.is/sip045-tracker

The PoX-5 upgrade has been activated without issues. Core contributors have verified the activation and the network is producing blocks normally. Signers, node operators, and exchanges migrated ahead of activation. More to come as the rollout continues.

The PoX-5 hardfork activation will occur at Bitcoin block 960,230 (expected at ~2AM ET on Thursday, July 30). The consensus upgrade paves the way for the launch of Bitcoin Staking. Because of the hardfork, every STX stacker will need to stack again to keep earning rewards.
