A first-time director just sold his debut out of Toronto for more than $10 million. Not a name. Not an adaptation. A contained slasher about three siblings on a boat. A24, Paramount, Netflix, and Focus circled and passed. Sony held at $8 million. Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster won it for north of $10 million. Why a debut commands that now: last year OBSESSION was produced for $750,000 and grossed roughly $512 million worldwide. Every buyer has been doing the math since. Everyone wants to know how to build a relationship with an executive. Almost nobody does the one thing that works. Start here. Every executive answers to somebody. A development exec answers to the head of production, to financiers, to whoever writes the checks. They have to explain every yes and every no. Which means they want to like you. Finding great content is their job, and they want you to be the person who brings it to them. So how do you keep that door open? You ask them about them. How are you doing. What are you working on. What are you seeing right now. What do you think is coming. That is the whole thing, and it only works when you mean it. Then when the moment is right: I have a few other things I am excited about, can I tell you about them? They will never think to ask. They are already on the next call. Their day is meetings, ideas, and getting told no a lot, same as yours. Treat them like a person. That is it. What relationship in your creative life started with no agenda at all?
