A timeline of the events surrounding the shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville on Yom Kippur, including what happened, when it happened, and what we know so far. Jewish Canadians deserve to worship safely and without fear.

Gunfire erupted around 7 p.m. ET near Belleville’s Sons of Jacob Synagogue, involving at least two suspects and Belleville Police. An ambulance left the scene, while multiple police cruisers remain, including members of the tactical unit.

JEWISH COMMUNITY GROUPS WELCOME ONTARIO ACTION TO HOLD UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES ACCOUNTABLE In response to the Government of Ontario’s announcement of new directives to strengthen accountability at Ontario universities under Bill 166, @HillelOntario , the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), the @CanadianFSWC , @UJAFederation , the Network of Engaged Canadian Academics, @AlliedVoicesIL , and @StandWithUsCA released the following joint statement: “The Ontario government has introduced new requirements to strengthen how colleges and universities respond to hate and discrimination on campus — including minimum requirements for policies and rules, clearer complaint processes including ensuring that regardless where complaints are submitted they are referred through the complaint’s mechanism process, anti-hate training, and new consequences for institutions that fail to comply. "At Toronto Metropolitan University, Justice Benotto found that existing policies were too often not enforced “consistently and decisively.” These new measures reinforce a simple principle: institutions must not only have rules, they must enforce them. "We have consistently called for stronger accountability and meaningful consequences when institutions fail to protect students or enforce their own policies. "As Jewish students face harassment, exclusion and discrimination on campuses across Ontario, including through antizionist behaviour, policies cannot exist only on paper. Institutions must act — and there must be consequences when they fail to do so. "This is an important step forward by the Ontario government toward ensuring universities are accountable for providing safe and welcoming campuses for all students and staff." At Toronto Metropolitan University, a recent external review has documented serious concerns about antisemitism, exclusion, intimidation and the erosion of a sense of belonging among members of the Jewish campus community. In response, B’nai Brith Canada joined @AlliedVoicesIL and @StandWithUsCA in writing to the Hon. Bob Rae, Chair of TMU’s President’s Implementation Task Force on Campus Expression, Antisemitism and Community Safety, urging the Task Force to turn the report’s recommendations into timely, meaningful and measurable action. We called on TMU to move with urgency, strengthen Jewish life on campus and ensure Jewish students, faculty and staff can participate fully in university life without fear of harassment or marginalization. This situation is untenable. Jewish students cannot wait. The time to act is now.

“We have these laws on the books. You are not allowed to stand on a street corner in the middle of a neighbourhood waving a terrorist flag and screaming genocidal slogans at your fellow Canadians. That is already illegal.” When it comes to acts of hate and antisemitism, @MelissaLantsman points to a lack of enforcement of existing laws as a key problem, not a lack of laws to begin with. Whether on our streets or within our schools, laws and protocols need to be enforced, and those responsible for doing so must be held accountable for the safety of the Jewish community and the country as a whole. Jewish woman wearing Star of David assaulted with broken bottles in Berlin. From campuses to synagogues to the streets of Europe, Jews were targeted simply for being Jewish. This is what rising antisemitism looks like.

After bringing politics to an entertainment show, Macklemore has been dropped from the remaining dates of Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour. At two shows in New Jersey this month, Macklemore made multiple “Free Palestine” remarks and opened his performance by singing his 2024 protest song “Hind’s Hall,” which condemns Israel and shows support for the anti-Israel university campus protests that took place. According to a statement from the promoter, upcoming venues said that “they will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup.” Concerts are meant to be spaces where people can come together, enjoy music, and be entertained – not places where audiences are subjected to political statements and activism from performers. We are pleased with this decision and commend the venues that spoke up and showed moral clarity.

Smashing mezuzahs in a residence on a university campus is an act of hate and intimidation. Taking place at the beginning of a new school year and during a High Holiday makes this act even more disturbing. No student should ever have to experience this. Wilfrid Laurier University, as well as every Canadian campus, should be a safe space for all students to openly express their identities without fear. 🚨BREAKING NEWS: Abdirazak Mahdi Ahmed, 23, has pleaded guilty to firing shots at Montreal’s Yeshiva Gedola three years ago and could face a 66-month prison sentence. Members of the Jewish community are expected to be present during the sentencing proceedings in October. Mahdi Ahmed was arrested in May 2024. Although charges against another man, 21-year-old Vaudreuil resident Feijhoo-Leito Joseph, were later dropped in connection with the shooting, Joseph is still facing a charge related to the stolen vehicle used to travel to and from the scene. Court records show that he intends to plead guilty at a later date.

Canada has joined Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK in announcing plans to restrict trade in goods produced Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). The decision has drawn criticism from the United States and Israel, with Israeli ministers calling for retaliatory measures against Britain, including the expulsion of its ambassador and closure of its consulate in East Jerusalem.

🚨BREAKING: Israeli security forces have apprehended a Hamas terrorist cell of 10 terrorists who were actively planning attacks against Israeli civilians. During the operation, a rocket was located and following interrogation, one of the terrorists revealed the location of a weapons cache containing an M16 rifle and a large quantity of explosives intended for manufacturing explosive devices. All weapons and explosives were dismantled on the spot.

As a new school year began, more than 834,000 Palestinian students in the West Bank/Judea and Samaria, are opening textbooks that glorify terrorists, promote violence, and incorporate antisemitism into subjects like math, science, and language - according to IMPACT-se, an Israeli education watchdog that monitors school curricula worldwide. Students learn addition and subtraction by counting "martyrs." Newton's law of gravity is illustrated with a slingshot aimed at Israeli soldiers. A fifth-grade reading lesson features Dalal Mughrabi, who participated in the 1978 Coastal Road massacre that killed 38 Israeli civilians including 13 children - presented as a hero. An eighth-grade grammar lesson glorifies suicide bombers who wore explosive belts. The same textbooks - produced by the Palestinian Authority's Education Ministry in Ramallah with European Union funding - are used in PA schools, UNRWA schools, and Hamas schools alike. "These books clearly helped create the environment that led to October 7," said IMPACT-se researcher Arik Agasi. "Our warnings were not heeded." Despite repeated international demands to end incitement in school textbooks, the Palestinian Authority continues to embed terror glorification and antisemitic content. This is a profound betrayal of its own future generations. This deliberate perpetuation of hatred and violence cannot be ignored. PA leaders must be held accountable for choosing indoctrination over peace and standing in the way of any hope for a better, more peaceful future.

🚨🚨🚨BREAKING: Ten Ontario lawyers, supported by @caefto, are calling on the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) to withdraw accreditation from TMU’s Lincoln Alexander School of Law, while protecting students already enrolled. They’re also calling for accreditation to return once TMU takes meaningful action to address antisemitism and discrimination. The motion follows findings from an independent review led by former Ontario Court of Appeal Justice Mary Lou Benotto, which raised serious concerns about the experiences of Jewish students, faculty and staff, as well as the school’s inadequate response. Because the motion missed the LSO’s 40-day deadline to be added to the Annual General Meeting agenda, the lawyers are petitioning the LSO to waive the deadline so the motion can be considered. StandWithUs Canada continues to call on TMU to act decisively, implement the review’s recommendations, and ensure Jewish and pro-Israel students can fully and safely participate in university life.
