One thing I learnt from this journey is that you have to be intentional. Dedicate time to this. It’s a full time job for real. Don’t just want a scholarship. Understand the programmes you’re applying to, what makes you a good fit and what the program can benefit from you too.

Scholarships get more competitive yearly. With more people in the pool every year and there are fewer and fewer scholarships allocated yearly too. The time of winning a scholarship by luck is no more. You need to know what you are doing. Good luck to everyone 🙏🏾

Do your applications yourself! Please, don’t copy and paste somebody else’s SOP or submit an AI-generated essay that sounds like everybody else’s. And if you’ve been applying unsuccessfully, you need to change something. Review your previous applications and work on the gaps.

You can still build your profile. If you feel your undergraduate grades aren’t competitive enough or your experience is lacking, look for ways to improve. Take relevant courses. Get research experience. Volunteer. Consider a master’s degree from Nigeria here if it helps you!

Find people who have gone through the programme. Alumni can give you insights you might not find on the official website. Reach out, ask specific questions and learn from their experiences. But please, Alumni are busy too. YouTube is also your friend. These things are online

Email the school or programme team if you need clarification. I don’t know why some people are so scared to ask questions. If something is unclear, ask. Be professional about it, obviously. Just don’t send an email asking something that’s clearly explained on the website.

Please, don’t joke with your supporting documents. Your SOP & CV aren’t the only things that matter. Your recommendation letters and other supporting documents matter too. Supporting documents should EXTEND your cohesive story and not replicate exactly what’s in your CV and SOP.
