Choose kindness. There’s a story about Jeff Bezos at age ten. He calculated the cost of his grandmother’s smoking: cigarettes per day, puffs per cigarette, plus a statistic he half remembered from an ad... roughly two minutes of life lost per puff. He leaned into the front seat and announced she’d given up nine years. He expected applause for being a math whizz. Instead, she cried. His grandfather pulled over, took him aside, and said something he never forgot: being kind is harder than being clever. "What I want to talk to you about today is the difference between gifts and choices. Cleverness is a gift; kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they're given, after all. Choices can be hard. You can seduce yourself with your gifts if you're not careful, and if you do, it'll probably be to the detriment of your choices." Jeff Bezos, Invent and Wander

Robert Greene on attribution bias: "When we make a mistake, we attribute it to circumstances that pushed us into doing it. But when others make a mistake, we tend to see it as a character flaw, as something that flowed from their imperfect personality. This is known as the attribution bias. You must work against this."

1P is about 2% of Shopee’s GMV, but its impact is much larger. Shopee didn’t build 1P to maximize profit. It built it to earn trust. That mattered even more in the early days (around 2016), when the platform struggled with credibility as many sellers pushed unbranded goods. Bringing in names like P&G, L’Oréal, and Samsung expanded selection, but more importantly, it builds trust.

Speculation becomes dangerous when we delude ourselves into thinking it's investing. The label determines the size. Confuse a bet as an investment, and you'll size it like one.

The stock market lets you ride on the coattails of the best businesses in the world. But only if you're willing to pay the price in volatility. Drawdown frequency: - A 10% drop: at least once every two years - A 30% drop: once every four or five years - A 50%+ drop: twice a century or so Over a 40-year investing life, that's at least 20 drops of 10%, eight to ten drops of 30%, and probably one halving.

Drawdowns are easier to stomach when you truly know what you own. The Lunch Break Investor shows you how to analyze a business. Start to finish, step by step. steadycompounding.com/book
