Great to be at my former college @yourCOPC to talk to A-level politics students. A fantastic set of questions asked on local, national and international issues.

We've all walked past them. The empty shop that's been boarded up for years. The old cinema gathering dust. The building everyone says, "someone should do something about that." Well, that's exactly what I'm doing. We're investing £210 million to help bring neglected high street buildings back into use - turning empty spaces into community hubs, health centres, shared workspaces, cafés and the local services that people actually want to see. The funding will also help communities save spaces like pubs and sports clubs and support co-operatives so local people can share directly in their area's success. People don't measure growth by looking at a spreadsheet. They measure it by looking at their local high street. That's how we restore pride and bring hope back. Not by telling people things are getting better, but by giving them the power to see and feel the difference where they live.

We've shown the UK is serious about boosting nature at UNGA and Climate Week NYC. Nature and climate security are national security.

Following the incident in Eastney on Sunday 6 September we have continued to take action to support our city’s communities, liaising with public services and taking concerns to Westminster. This has included a meeting with the Minister for Border Security, with Border Force, the Home Office and officials across Government in recent days. That liaison has continued in the past 24 hours. The Minister has informed us that lessons are being learnt and that the Home Office and Border Security Command are working hard to avoid a repeat of the disruption and disorder experienced earlier this month in Portsmouth while ensuring the Government can continue to meet its maritime safety obligations. Robust contingency plans are essential to ensure security and cooperation between authorities. We have heard that the Government’s priority is to prevent such crossings taking place in the first instance and that’s why Ministers are driving down small boat crossings, with this summer being the lowest in six years. Crucially the Prime Minister met with the French President just a few weeks ago to agree further officers to be deployed further down the coast to prevent these kinds of dispersal crossings. We are welcome this latest intervention as Government plans continue to bear down the number of crossings. As Portsmouth MPs we understand people's anger and frustrations about small boat crossings and will continue to make sure our city’s voice is heard in Westminster and ensure further action is taken by government head on. For too long, families and expecting parents in Portsmouth haven't had the legally protected right to bereavement leave following the passing of an immediate family member, or after experiencing pregnancy loss. As part of our plan to Make Work Pay, helping people stay in work and giving the breathing room, the Government has just announced that every employee will have the right to bereavement leave from April 2027.
