Apparently the Minneapolis Public School Board is proposing to close down several schools. They claim it's because they're chronically underfunded. Would someone like to explain that to me like I'm five? Minneapolis pubic schools spend 39% more than the national average for k-12 students. They are spending more than Minnehaha Academy at this point. Minneapolis Public Schools spends about $24,469 per student, compared with $16,246 statewide, yet describes itself as “chronically underfunded.” Enrollment has fallen to about 29,000 students, while its buildings have capacity for roughly 43,000, leaving more than 12,000 empty seats. MPS is considering ending programming at as many as 16 schoolsbecause revenue has fallen with enrollment while staffing, benefits, buildings, transportation and special-education costs have not fallen as quickly. In short, MPS can spend far more per student than the state average and still run a deficit because it claims it continues operating a system built for thousands more students.
