Recalcitrant Canadian. Political scientist @UBCpolisci. International relations, democratic institutions, and all manner of BC and Cdn politics. Dad jokes.
Let me be clear: BC did not veer sharply right in this election. Doerkson carefully campaigned as a moderate, which was crucial to his success. Even so, the BC Conservatives still lost votes in absolute terms compared with 2024!
NDPers stayed home in droves—that's the story.
David Eby called an ill-conceived election and proceeded to run a cynical, polarizing campaign. Conservatives held their line and won decisively, above all because Eby alienated former NDP voters, many of whom simply chose to sit this one out. theconversation.com/david-eb…
And the relevant historical stat is that this is BC's first right of centre government in nine years, not that it's the first Conservative government in nearly a century.

David Eby’s Colossal Miscalculation Hands Election to BC Conservatives
@Dave_Eby screwed up. Bad decision to call a snap election.
@StewartPrest explains why.
Also discusses tension within @Conservative_BC between traditional cons and populists.

My take on last night's BC election.

“I have covered 10 elections in Delta — municipal, provincial and federal.
And never, in all that time, has someone running to represent the residents of Delta/North Delta asked me not to cover them on election night.”
For whatever reason, the Conservative Party of BC is keeping media at arm’s length on election night in B.C.
OPINION: No-coverage request from one local candidate. Really?

BC politics surprises us. David Eby has played a political gambit by calling a snap election, but it seems he has managed to galvanise the @Conservative_BC. I had Dr. @StewartPrest of @UBC Vancouver to comment on this. Do hear! #DavidEby#BCNDP#BCConservatives
